(FIRST PART).

In Sanskrit, Mahabharata was written by Bhagawan Veda Vyasa.
It was translated into Telugu by Kavitrayam viz, Nannayya, Yerrana and Tikkana. The enire translation was done in verse form and prose.
Durng 1022 AD, Rajamahendravaram (now called as Rajahmundry, East Godavari District) was ruled by King Raja Raja Narendra. In his Court, there was a great poet called Nannayya. During 1055 A.D, at the request of King Raja Raja Narendra, Nannayya translated Sanskrit Maha Bharata into Telugu. He translated Aadi parva, Sabhaa Parva and some portion in Aranya Parva and dedicated the same to King Raja Raja Narendra.
Later, during 1255-60 A.D. Simhapuri (now called Nellore) was ruled by Manumasiddhi. In his court, there was a great poet called Tikkana Somayaji. Tikkana Somayaji continued the translation work commenced by Nannaya. But he started translating Mahabharat from Virata Parva and completed the remaining Fifteen Parvas and dedicated the same to Lord Hari Haranatha. He did not complete the unfinished portion of Aranya Parva.
Later, during the earlier part of 1400 A.D. a great poet called Yerra Praggada completed Aranya Parva, left by Nannayya.
We have so far completed Aadi parva, Sabha Parva and Aranya Parva written by Nannaya and Yerrapraggada, and entering Virata Parva written by Tikkana.
Let us know something about Tikkana Somayaji who had written fifteen parvas in Maha Bharata.
Tikkana Somayaji was the son of Kommana Dandanaadhudu and his wife Annamaamba. He was born in Goutama Gotram, Aapastambha Sootram.
One day, his father Kommana Dandanaadhudu and Lord Hari Hara Natha appeared in his dream and requested him to translate Maha Bharat into Telugu.
Accordingly, Tikkana Somayaji translated 15 Parvas into Telugu and dedicated the same to Lord Hari Haranadha.
While Nannayya dedicated his Mahabharat to KingRaja Raja Narendra, Tikkana dedicated his writings to Lord Hari Haranadha.
In Maha Bharat, we come across the episodes of Ajnaata Vaasamu and Krishna Raayabaaram.
In the real life of Tikkana also, he experienced both Ajnata Vasa and Raaya Baaram.
While Manumasiddhi was ruling Simhapuri (Nellore), Tikkana was his minister. At that time, King Ganapati Deva was ruling Kakatiya Kingdom from Orugallu (present Warangal).
Manumasiddhi was defeated and exiled by his step brothers Akkaya and Bayyana and he was driven out of his kingdom. In this task, one King Kulottunga Chola helped Akkana and Bayyana.
At that time, Poet Tikkana kept Manuma Siddhi in Ajnaata Vaasa. Then, along with his Sishyas, he went to Orugallu and met King Ganapati Deva as the emissary of Manumasiddhi. Poet Tikkana won the laurels of King Ganapati Deva by explaining Maha Bharata in detail. He defeated Buddhist Monks in dual arguments.
King Ganapati Deva asked Poet Tikkana "What do you want?"
Poet Tikkana explained in detail the political turmoil in Simhapuri and about the fate of Manumasiddhi and sought the help of King Ganapati Deva in installing Manumasiddhi again on the throne of Simhapuri (Nellore).
King Ganapati Deva responded positively. He had a talk with Kulottanga Chola and stopped his help to Akkanna and Bayyanna. He defeated Akkanna and Bayyanna and installed Manumasiddhi on the throne of Simhapuri. Thus Poet Tikkana succeeded in restoring Manumasiddhi to his Kingdom.
Poet Tikkana lived for 78 years, from 1210 AD to 1288 AD.
In the writings of Tikkana, we mostly see dramatisation of events. Ofcourse, Nannayya also commenced dramatisation even in Sabha Parva. But Tikkana completely adopted dramatisation of events in writing Maha Bharat. The following may be the reason.
We are aware, during that time, Kakateeya Kingdom was ruled by King Ganapati Deva. During the reign of Kakatiya kings, fine arts like music, dance, drama etc., flourished in abudance. One Jaayappa Senani (Army Chief) wrote a book on the art of dance called Nrutta Ratnaakaram. Several carvings and sculptures of dance styles on the walls of temples in Orugallu are the only proof. During that time Poet Tikkana translated Mahabharat. Therefore, the flourishing of fine arts in Kakatiya Empire might have influenced Poet Tikkana in adopting dramatisation in Mahabharat.

Janamejaya, the grand son of Arjuna, asked Saint Vaisampaayana:
"O Saint! Kindly tell me how, our grand fathers, Pandavas, on completion of Aranya Vasa, spent Ajnaata Vaasa, unrecognised by Kouravas" .
Saint Vaisampaayana continued to say:

Yudhishtira addressed all the Brahmins accompanied them during Vanavasa
"O Brahmins! you all have been associated with us all these twelve years and undergone much hardship. We have to undergo one year Ajnaata Vaasa as per the agreement with Suyodhana. Kindly bless us to complete Ajnatavasa uninterruptedly" requested Yudhishtira.
"Yudhishtira! you are the embodiment of Dharma. In the past also, after the killing of Vrutraasura, Indra spent some time in Ajnaatavaasa on Nishadhaacala; likewise Lord Hari spent Ajnatavasa in the womb of Adithi as Vaamana; similary Ourva spent some time in the thigh of his mother; it is only due to bad time. Later, Indra, Hari and Ourva attained their previous glory. Similary, you also will attain your previous glory on completion of Ajnata vasa" said Dhoumya, the Purohit.
Then all the Bramins left Pandavas to their own places.
Then Yudhishtira called all his brothers and said:
"Exiled from our kingdom, we have passed 12 years. The 13th year, hard to spend, has now come. Do you therefore select some spot where we may pass our days undiscovered by our enemies. " said Yudhishtira.
"Even by virtue of Yama Dharma's boon, we will not be discovered by anybody. Still, for purpose of residene, I shall mention some spots that are both delightful and secluded. Please select some one of them.
Surrounding the Kingdom of Kurus, there are many countries beautiful and abounding in corns, such as Paanchaala, Chedi, Matsya, Saalva, Videha, Baahlika, Dasaarna, Soorasena, Kalinga, Magadha. Which of these, would you choose and where shall we spend this year?" said Arjuna.
"As far as my knowledge goes, King Virata, ruling Matsya Kingdom, is a virtuous, powerful and charitable and is liked by all. He is also attached to Pandavas. We shall enter the city of Virata and spend this one year. Tell me in what capacities will you dwell in the city of Virata?" asked Yudhishtira.
"Brother Yudhishtira! you are mild, modest and charitable and virtuous and firm in promise. How will you overcome this great calamity that has overtaken you? asked Arjuna.
"On appearing before King Virata, I shall present myself as a Brahmin, Kanka by name. I know Srouta, Smarta, Sakuna, Jyothisha and other sciences. I am also skilful in dice game. I shall become a courtier of Virata and show my talent in the above fields. Should the King Virata ask me I shall say "formerly I was the friend of Yudhishtira" . It is thus I shall pass my days." said Yudhishtira.
Yudhishtira looked at Bheemaa "O Bheemaa! you have killed Bakasura, Kimmeeraa. What office will you take?" asked Yudhishitira.
"Brother Yudhishtira! I intend to present myself before King Virata as a cook bearing the name of Valala. I am skilled in culinary art. I shall prepare curries for the king and excelling all those skilful cooks who have been serving the King hitherto. I shall gratify the monarch.
I shall command to subdue powerful elephants. If any combatants will fight with me, I will vanquish them and thereby entertain the monarch. But I shall not take any life of them. I shall only bring them down in such a way that they may not be killed. On being asked as regards my antecedents, I shall say "formerly I was the wrestler and cook of Yudhishtira. Thus I maintain myself." said Bheema.
Yudhishitira then looked at Arjuna. "Arjuna! What about you. What office will be performed by you?" asked Yudhishtira.
"While I was with Devendra, when Urvasi tried to have sexual pleasure with me, I refused. She cursed me to become a neuter sex. But Devendra modified it saying that I may undergo that curse during Ajnaata vaasa and on completion of Ajnaatavasa, I will be relinquished of that curse.
Hence, I will declare myself as one of the neuter sex. I shall appear as one of the third sex, Bruhannala by name, and living as a female. I shall entertain the king and the inmates of the inner apartments by reciting stories. I shall also instruct the women of the palace in singing and delightful modes of dancing and in playing musical instruments of diverse kinds.
Should the king enquire me, I will say that I lived as a waiting maid of Draupadi in the Palace of Yudhishtira. Concealing myself by these means, as fire is concealed by ashes, I shall pass my days in the palace of Virata." said Arjuna.
Then Dharmaja looked at Nakula. "While living in the dominions of King Virata, Nakula, what office will you take. Tell me all about it?" asked Dharmaja.
"Brother Yudhishtira! In the name of Dhaamagrandhi, I shall become the keeper of the horses of King Virata. I have thorough knowledge of this work and I am skilful in tendering horses. Besides, this task is agreeable to me. I possess great skill in training and treating horses and the horses are ever dear to me. To those persons who enquire about me, I will tell "formerly I was employed by Yudhishtira in charge of his horses". Thus, disguised, I shall spend my days delightfully in the city of Virata. I will gratify the King Virata in such a way that no one will be able to discover me." said Nakula.
"Sahadeva! how will you bear yourself before that King and what is that which you will do in order to live in disguise?" asked Yudhishtira.
"I will become a keeper of the kine of King Virata. I am skilled in milking kine and taking their history as well as taming them. Passing in the name of Tantri Paala, I shall perform my duties skilfully. If asked, I will tell that I was formerly keeping the kine of Yudhishtira. I always take delight in work of this kind. No one will then be able to recognise me and I will moreover gratify the King Virata." said Sahadeva.
Then, Yudhishtira looked at Droupadi. "This is our beloved wife, Droupadi, dearer to us than our lives. Delicate and Young, she is a princess of great repute. Unacquainted as she is, with any kind of womanly work, what office will she perform?" said Yudhishitira with sorrowful voice.
"There is a class of persons called Sairandhris. I will go before Queen Sudheshna, as a Sairandhri, by name Malini. On being questioned by the Queen, I shall say that I served as a waiting woman of Droupadi. I shall thus pass my days in disguise and I shall serve the Queen Sudheshna, the wife of Virata. Surely she will cherish me" said Droupadi.
Yudhishtira was satisfied with what has been said by his brothers and Droupadi. All are fixed in their own positions. Yudhishtira requested Priest Dhoumya to protect Agnihotram carefully. All the other persons like chariot drivers, cooks, personal servants were sent out to their respective places. While leaving them, Yudhishtira told them that "if any body asks about our whereabouts, you may tell that you donot know where Pandavas have gone leaving all of you at Dvaitavana."
Then Priest Dhoumya told Pandavas thus:
"Dharmaja! all of you were born in a respectable Kuru race, and led a virtuous life. At this juncture, it is very difficult for you to serve others. You should not forget that, for the present, the time is not in your favour. This is not proper time to exhibit your vigour, valour and heroism. That may break your Ajnatavasa agreement.
To dwell with a king is a highly difficult task. I shall therefore speak to you how you may reside in the royal household, avoiding every fault.
One should not wear more costly clothes than King or reside in a palace more than a king and should not speak unnecessarily before a king.

Generally, Kings do not forgive even their own sons, brothers, relatives and friends if they happen to tamper with their dignity.
One should not accept any work which he will not be able to discharge properly; otherwise he will have to face the unpleasantness of the King.
One should not keep himself silent before a king, nor he should be more talkative. One should speak softly and tactfully before a king and win his favour.
One should not leak out the royal secrets to anybody.
After carefully deliberating on all things, a person should set forth, before the king, those topics that are both profitable and pleasing.
One should never occupy a seat higher than a king. One should not feel proud that King praised him or feel sorrow that King cursed him.
One should discharge the royal duties entrusted to him with great care and devotion, irresepctive of place, time, weather, hunger or thirst.
One should feel the royal moneys and property as poison, misappropriating royal funds may take away his life.
One should not laugh, snore or sleep in the presence of King.

One should not move friendly with the enemies of King or with their men.
A servant should not enjoy more plealsures than a King. It may not be liked by the King.
Therefore, during the Ajnatavasa period, you have to move in the royal household with greatest care and caution so that you should not be recognised by anybody." said Dhoumya, the Priest.
Dharmaja, with folded hands, said: "You are my Priest andwell wisher. We have been well taught by you. There is none that could say so to us." said Yudhishtira.
Then Pandavas started their journey to Matsya kingdom. They were walking along Yamuna river and reached the outskirts of Matsya kingdom.
Dhoumya, along with Agnihotra, stopped in an Ashram.
Pandavas continued their journey through forest areas. Droupadi was very much tired and she could not proceed further.
"Pass we here for the rest of the night, for, great is fatigue" said Droupadi.
Dharmaja did not agree. His aim is to reach Virata City as early as possible. Droupadi could not move a step further. Dharmaja asked Nakula to carry Droupadi. Nakula expressed his inability as he was also very much tired.
Yudhishtira looked at Arjuna "Arjuna! will you take up Panchaali and carry her upto the outskirts of Virata City?"
Arjuna took up Droupadi and carried upto the outskirts of Virata City.
"Arjuna! where shall we deposit our weapons before entering the city. If, we enter, with our weapons, we shall surely excite the alarm of the citizens" said Dharmaja and looked around.
In the vicinity, there was a burial ground. Generally prople were not moving there. Besides that, people believe that devils and demons were roaming there. There was a mighty Samee Tree throwing its gigantic branches to four sides and very difficult to ascend.
Arjuna said: "Brother Dharmaja! I think this Sami Tree is the fittest place to keept our arms."
Then Pandavas kept their bows, arrows, knives etc., on a skin with hair and bundled them. Dharmaja found a dead body of an animal. He asked Nakula to peel its skin and bring it. Arjuna wrapped the skin to the bundle. There was a dead body of unidenified person lying at a distance. Arjuna brought and tied that dead body also along with the main bundle.
Yudhishtira, along with the bundle containing the bows, arrows, knives etc, climbed the tree and hanged that bundle to a big branch. Dharmaja prayed that the bundle should be invisible to others, especially to Bheema, and should be visibe only to himself and Arjuna and it should appear as a bundle of poisonous serpants to others.
(Dharmaja might have entertained a doubt in his mind that, during the course of Ajnatavasa, at any point of time, Bheema, in a fit of anger, may run up to this tree, take his mace and attack Kouravas, in order to to kill them, thus breaking the agreement of Ajnatavasa.).
Dharmaja climbed down the Sami tree. He looked around. He saw some cowherds grazing their cattle. He went near them and told them "My aged mother died with disease. As per our caste custom, we have to hang the dead body to a Sami tree. Hence we hanged the dead body to that branch of this Sami Tree." said Dharmaja.
The cowherds were verymuch frightened with his words. They swiftly ran away to inform about the same to their friends.
Then Yudhishtira prayed Yama Dharma Raja. They were transformed into a Brahmin Sanyasi, a cook, a Bruhannala, horse keeper and cowherd respectively. Yudhishtira told his brothers and Droupadi to enter the city one by one. First Yudhishtira entered Virata City.
Incidentally, on that day, King Virata was going round the city. The King saw Dharmaja as Sanyasi Brahmin.
"Enquire who he is. He cannot be a brahmin. He shines like Indra. I think he is the lord of this earth" said Virata. Dharmaja was brought before him.
"Who are you? To which place you belong? What made you to come over here?" asked Virata.
"O Great King Virata! Know me for a brahmin, who, having lost all his wealth, has come to you for means of subsistence. I desire to live here beside you." requested Dharmaja.
"You are welcome. Tell me also particularly what is your name, family and what knowledge you have?" asked Virata.
"My name is Kanka I am a brahmin. I am skilled in dice game.I lost all my wealth in dice game. Unable to bear that agony, I left my country. I heard that you are a virtuous king. I will remain here for a period of one year. Then I will go away in serch of my enemies. Formerly, I was a friend of Yudhishtira." said Yudhishtira.
Virata satisfied with his replies. "I will give you whatever position you want. It is my fortune to have you with us. Kanka is as much lord of this realm as myself. There shall also be at his disposal apparel in plenty, various kinds of food, drinks etc., for you, all my doors are open" ordered Virata.
"I do not want any royal plealsures. I will eat the remains of Homa and will sleep on the ground and comlete my one year period." said Dharmaja.
"You may live as you like" said Virata.
Thus Yudhishtira entered the royal palace of Virata.
Then entered Bheema, holding in hand a cooking ladle, a big spoon and an unsheathed sword. He came in the guise of a cook. He bowed before King Virata.
"O King Virata! I am a cook, Valala by name. I am skilled in preparing sumptious dishes.. Plese employ me as a cook. I was previously worked as Cook in the palace of Yushishtira. I am also a wrestler and I will entertain you with my wrestling. If you dont like me, I will go elsewhere" said Bheema.
" I am very much impressed with your words. Do as you like. Be you the superintendent of the kitchen and you are placed at the head of all those who have been working in the kitchen." said King Virata.
Thus Bheema entered the court of King Virata as a cook.
Next appeared at the gate of the royal palace, another person of enormous size and exqusite beauty, decked with the ornaments of a woman, wearing large ear rings, with long hair floating about his neck.
"O King Virata! I am proficient in dance and skilled in singing and playng all kinds of instruments. Know me to be Brihannala, a third sex. I will teach music and dance to young girls in your palace. Kindly allow me to join in your inner apartments" said Arjuna.
Virata looked at Arjuna "You are so beautiful. How you become brihannala?" asked Virata.
"By virtue of some curse, I am undergoing this neuter sex. Due to this neuter sex , I could not do any work. I learnt music and dance from my childhood." said Arjuna.
King Virata was satisfied that he belongs to neuter sex. He called his daugher, Uttara.
"Brihannalaa! this is my daughter, Uttara. Will you teach dance to her?" asked Virata.
Brihannala humbly replied that she will do it.
"Brihannalaa! she is still childish and interested in playing. You have to inculcate in her some interest in learning music and dance and give him good training." said Virata.
"My child! She is your teacher. You have to learn dance with great devotion" so saying Virata handed over Uttara to Brihannala.
Thus Arjuna joined the office of Virata as dance master.
Then entered Nakula, in the attire of horse keeper. At that time, King Virata was examining some horses bought by him earlier. Nakula began to observe the horses around. King Virata stared at Nakula and thought that he was having proficiency in horses. He asked his minister to enquire about Nakula.
At that time, Nakula himself approached King Virata and said: "O King Virata! I will look after your horses. As a trainee of horses, I have alwlays been highly esteemed by kings. I will be a clever keeper of your horses" said Nakula.
"Who are you? From where you have come? Tell me all the arts you are master of?" asked Virata.
" My name is Tamagrandhi. I was formerly employed by Yudhishtira to keep his horses." said Nakula.
King Virata was very much satisfied with his antecedents.
"Whatever horses I have, I consign to you their care even from today. All the keepers of my horses and all my charioteers will, from today, be subordinate to you." said King Virata.
In this manner, Nakula joined as horse keeper.
With a long stick in his hand, and a bundle of ropes on his head, Sahadeva entered the city of Virata clad in a cowherd dress.
King Virata asked him "Who are you? Where do you come? I have never seen you before. Tell me the truth about you?" asked King Virata.
"O King Virata! victory is yours. I was employed as a cowherd in the service of kuru race. I intend now to serve you. I was previously employed in keeping the cattle of Yudhishtira. He used to call me Tantri pala. I am well acquainted with the kinds of kine and the possible diseases they may get. I can treat them." asked Sahadeva.
"I am having innumerable kine. I place you in charge of all my kine." said King Virata.

Thus Sahadeva joined the service of King Virata as cowherd. In this manner, all five pandavas got their abode in Virata City. Now remains their wife, Droupadi.
Binding her black, soft, fine long hair into a knotted braid, wearing a soiled saree, filling her heart with service motto, Droupadi was walking along the streets in Virata City.
At that time, Queen Sudheshna was standing on the top of the palace for fresh air. She saw Droupadi walking along the streets. She sent her servant maid to fetch her. Accordingly,Droupadi was brought before her.
"Oh beautiful lady! Who are you? What do you seek?" asked Sudheshna.
"I am a maid servant of Sairandhri class. My name is Malini. I know to dress hair and also to make beautiful and variegated garlands. Previously, I served Satya Bhama, wife of Sri Krishna and Droupadi. I am the wife of five husbands. But I was insulted by enemies in the presence of my husbands. I went to forests along with my husbands. I have to spend one more year. I am in search of a respectable abode where I can spend that one year period. I heard that you are a virtuous and respectable queen. I will serve you in a respecable manner. Will you employ me?" asked Droupadi.
Sudheshna got a doubt "Sairandhri! you appear tobe more beautiful. If my husband himself will be attracted by your beauty, what can I do? It is nothing but keeping fire upon my head. Even ladies are looking at you with lust. What male person is there that can resist your attraction? I may bring destruction upon myself by harbouring you." said Sudheshna.
"O Queen Sudheshna! neither King Virata nor any other person will be able to touch me, for, my five youthful husbands who are Gandharvas always protecting me. Any man that attempts to have me like any other woman, will meet with death that very night. Therefore no one can succeed in having me for, those Gandharvas possessing of great energy and mighty strength always protect me secretely. I have no such bad intention to attract anybody. You can believe me. I have got some principles. I will not touch food already parttaken by another nor I will touch or wash anybody legs." said Droupadi.
Sudheshna satisfied with the character of Sairandhri and admitted her into her household.
In this manner, all five pandavas and Droupadi joined the royal palace of King Virata in disguise and spending their time happily.

Saint Vaisampaayana continued to tell Janamejaya, the story of Mahabharat.
Dharmaja, in the court of Virata, was spending time playing dice games and exhibiting his adept in the mysteries of dice. He was distributing among his brothers, the wealth he won from Virata, by playiNg dice game.
Bheemaa, on his part, distributing the remaining cooked food and meat to all his brothers.
Arjuna was giving to all his brothers the moneys he earned by exhibiting his talent in singing and dancing.
Nakula and Sahadeva also was earning moneys while discharging their duties and distributing them among their brothers, the moneys they earned.
Droupadi herself, in pitiable condition, was looking after all those brothers and behaved in such a way as to remain unrecognised.
Thus, four months passed. There was a grand festival in the City of Virata. There came athletes from all quarters by thousands. Amongst them, there was one by name Jeemoota, who towered above the rest and challenged the wrestlers in the court of Virata, to a combat.

He told the King "I have visited many places. There was none even to approach me. Is there anybody in your country to combat with me" challenged that athlet.
All the wrestlers in the court of Virata stood sad. Virata was very much annoyed. Dharmaja came to his rescue
"O King Virata! while I was associated with King Yudhishtira, there was one wrestler in his court. That wrestler is now working as cook in your kitchen. He defeated many wrestlers in the combat" said Dharmaja.
King Virata ordered Valala to combat with that great wrestler. Valala looked at his brother, Yudhishtira. Yudhishtira expressed his consent by a knod.
Both of them were possessed of great courage and terrible prowess. They began to fight with each other. Beehama roared like a lion and jumped upon him. Various were the modes of attack and defence that they exhibited with their clenched fists. Each dashed against the other and flung his adversary to a distance. They slapped each other with their palms that struck as hard as thunderbolt.
At last, the powerful Bheema struck Jeemoota on his nose and throw him away and defeated him. Virata gave Valala many presents for defeating Jeemoota. Valala distributed all those moneys to poor and needy and retired to his kitchen.

In this manner, King Virata made him to fight with wrestlers and where there were no wrestlers, with lions and elephants, for the pleasure of the ladies in the inner apartments.
The time was passing on. The one year Ajnaata vaasa was coming to an end within few days. One day, the Commander of Virata Forces, by name Kichaka, chanced to behold Malini, when he visited his sister Sudheshna, wife of King Virata.
Beholding Malini, Kichaka was afflicted with the shaft of Manmadha, and desired to possess her. He felt that his life was waste without her. He was burning with desire's flame.
Droupadi was very much annoyed with the lustful looks of Kichaka. At that time she was wearing a soiled saree. But Kichaka did not care even for his Sister Sudheshna and the servant maids. He was staring at Malini with lustful looks.
After some time, he came to senses and greeted his sister Sudheshna. "Sister Susheshna! Who is this beautiful lady? Whose she is? When she has come and from where? She had never before been seen by me in your abode. This damsel maddens me with its beauty." said Kichaka.
Without waiting for the answer, he apprached Droupadi. "O beautiful lady! who are you? What is your name? Who are your parents? Who is your husband?" asked Kichaka.
Droupadi kept quiet without giving answer.
"O fair lady! Your beauty maddens me. I wish to touch you but my hands are shivering. You lady of exceeding beauty, I am subjected to the shafts of Manmadha. I will forsake all my older wives. Let them become your slaves." said Kichaka under the influence of lust.
With these words of Kichaka, Droupadi grew angry. But she does not want to hasten. "O brother! I am in many troubles. Look at me and my soiled clothes. Your are great. You got a beautifl sister. Treat me also as your sister. I was born in a low caste. I worship my husbands. You should not speak like this" said Droupadi.
Kichaka lost control over his senses and overcome by lust. "You should not speak like that. Your beauty maddemed me. You are not a lady of low caste. I can bear the sin which will be afflicted by adultery but I could not control the flaming fire kindled by Manmadha." said Kichaka
Droupati could not control herself any more "O Kichaka! Dont act so foolishly and dont throw away your life. Know that I am protected by my five husbands, Gandharvas. You cannot have me. Enraged, they will slay you." cautioned Droupadi.

"O young lady! Not only your husbands, Gandharvas, there is no one on the earth who rivals me in beauty, vigour, valour, youth, prosperity. Know that none can defeat me" said Kichaka.
"O foolish Kichaka! Dont you know, in the past, Ravana and other raakshasas died for the sake of wives of others." said Droupadi with anger and went away.
Sudheshna was observing all these developments. "Kichaka is afflicted with maddening lust. I do not know what will happen to him. What can I do? Any how I will try my level best" thought Sudheshna.
"Brother Kichaka! There are several beautiful ladies in your inner apartments for your plealsure. Why you desire a female servant of low attraction employed in the despicable office of dressing hair. Kindly heed my words" said Sudheshna.
"Sister Sudheshna! There is none on earth who is more beautiful than this lady. It is true. Her eyes, her hands, her legs, her voice, her body curves, are so marvellous. I desire her. By whatever means, I want her" said Kichaka.
"Brother Kichaka! Heed my words. Dont be foolish. With this act, your health, wealth, life and fame will diminish. Virtuous people will never uphold it. It is not wise. Besides that, how can you enjoy sensual pleasures wih that lady with the fear in mind that if any body knows it, you will be defamed; or her husbands may at any time kill you. Therefore, adultery is not safe. I am more afraid of her five husbands. Kindly forget her" said Sudheshna. Kichaka did not heed the words of Sudheshna.

Kichaka turned to his sister Sudheshna "Do you so act that your sairandhri may come into my arms. Do you adpet the means by which the damsel may accept me." said Kichaka.
"He is a fool. He will never heed my words. His death is imminent, either in the hands of her husbands, Gardharvas or in the hands of Manmadha with his lustful desires." thought Sudheshna.
"Brother Kichama! Certainly I will do it. Dont worry. I shall send Malini to you on the pretext of bringing some wine and when she comes, you may convince her. She may incline her mind to you" said Sudheshna.
Satisfied with her reply, Kichaka went away. Kichaka made arrangements for a grand dinner with several eatables and drinks. He granted leave to all the servants and sent them away so that nobody will be present in his palace. At a beautiful place he was waiting for the arrival of Malini, imagining the sensual pleasures he will enjoy with Malini.
There, Sudheshna called Malini "Malini! I am feeling thirsty. Best quality wine is available at the residence of my brother Kichaka. Please go there immediately and bring some wine for me" said Sudheshna.
On hearing these words, Malini shivered. "I shall not go to the palace of Kichaka. You know how shameless he is. In your palace, I shall not be able to lead a lustful life becoming faithless to my husbands. Please remember the conditions I set down before entering your house. The foolish Kichaka, on seeing me, will insult me. Therefore I will not go to his quarters. Many maids are there under you. Send one of them" requested Malini.
"No. I am sending you to bring my favourite wine. How can I send some low class people for this purpose. The palace of Kichaka is not alien to you. He is my own brother. Sent by me, from my house, surely he will not harm you. Dont worry" said Sudheshna.
Malini, filled with apprehensions, and weeping, mentally prayed for the protection of Gods and went to the abode of Kichaka for fetching wine.
She prayed Sun God "As I do not know another person other than my husbands, by virtue of that truth, let Kichaka not be able to overpower me although I may approach his presence". Lord Surya considered her prayer and commanded a Rakshasa (demon) to protect her invisibly. Thus commanded, from that moment, the Rakshasa began to attend upon that blameless lady under any circumstances.
Malini then entered the palace of Kichaka and approached Kichaka. "I have been sent to you by Sudheshna for bringing some wine. Do you speedily bring me wine for, she told me, that she is exceedingly thirsty." asked Malini.
"O beautiful lady! you have come for the thirst of your Lady. But what about my thirst. Will you not quench my thirst of lust and rule me as your slave. " said Kichaka.
"If I am late, Sudheshna will grew angry. Please give me the wine I have to go" requested Malini.
" Dont worry I will send some other maid with wine to Sudheshna. You consume this beautiful wine and quench my thirst. I will make you my queen. All my wives will serve you as slaves. I will also be at your feet" said Kichaka.
So saying, Kichaka suddenly seized her by the end of her upper garment as she attempted to run away. The Rakshasa who was protecting her came to her rescue. With the invisible influence of Rakshasa, Malini dashed Kichaka to the ground. Kichaka tumbled down like a huge tree.
Having thrown Kichama down, she rushed to the Court of Virata. While Malini was running with all her speed, Kichaka followed her to the court of Virata, seizing her by hair and bringing her down on the ground, kicked her in the very presence of the King Virata.
The Rakshasa who was protecting her, gave Kichaka a shove with a force mighty as that of the wind. Overpowered by the force of Rakshasa, Kichaka reeled and fell down senseless on the ground, even like an uprooted tree.
At that time both Yudhishtira and Bheemasena (Valala) were seated there beheld with wrathful eyes with the outrage on Droupadi by Kichaka. With the desire of killing Kichaka, Bheema gnashed his teeth in rage and tried to cut a tree nearby.
Yudhishtira stopped him. "Look, you cook, for the sake of fuel, why you are cutting a fruitbearing tree." Bheema controlled his anger and kept quiet. Droupadi observed the anger of Bheema and the pacifying of Yudhishtira.
"O King Virata, Kichaka now kicked the proud and beloved wife of those whose foe can never sleep in peace. You know pretty well all Dharma. My husbands, five gandharvas, who are capable of punishing the wrong doers, are keeping quiet while Kichaka is outraging me. Where is protection for a common lady in this kingdom? Nobdoy is raising their voice when a woman is outraged in their very presence. O king Virata! you donot act like a King towards Kichaka. Your behaviour does not shine in court. I should thus be insulted in your very presence, O King, is highly improper." directly questioned Droupadi.
Incapable of reprimand Kichaka, King Virata told Droupadi: "I do now know what your dispute is. Not knowing the true cause, how can I show my discrimination. I will enquire and take action" spoke like a veteran politician.
Observing all this, Kichaka retired to his palace. Yudhishtira said: "Stay not there O Sairandhri! but retire to the palace of Sudheshna. Wives of heroes bear affliction for the sake of their husbands. All have observed what had happened. Justice will be done to you. Your gandharva husbands do not consider this as an action for manifesting their wrath inasmuch as they do not rush to your aid. You are ignorant of the timeliness of things and you are weeping as an actress on stage. Your gandharva husbands will do what is agreeable to you and take the life of him that has wronged you." said Yudhishtira.
"Yes. My husband is an actor. It is an undisputed truth. Youngsters will follow eldelrs. I also follow my husband. So I am also an acress on the stage. My husband is not only an actor, he is a gambler too. What great respect will the wife of a gambler get in this court." so saying Malini ran back to the apartments of Sudheshna.
Knowing fully well what had happened, Sudheshna, on seeing Malini, innocently asked her "Malini! what had happened? Who insulted you? Why do you weep? Who has done you wrong? asked Sudheshna.
"As I went to bring wine for you, Kichaka struck me in the court in the very presence of the king and in the midst of all." said Malini.
"Kichaka, maddedned by lust, has insulted you. I will enquire and cause him to be slain, if you wish." said Sudheshna.
"You need not worry about it. My gandharva husbands will wreak vengeance. I am sure, it is clear that he will have to go to the abode of Yama this very night" said Malini.
On hearing these words, Sudheshna was frightened. Thus insulted by Kichaka, Malini, eagerly wishing for the destruction of Kichaka, rushed back to her apartments.
(Who is this Kichaka? In one of the Sanskrit texts, as a foot note it was written like this.
A person who was born to a Kshatriya through a Brahmin lady is called Soota. It is Soota community. He is placed below Kshatriya and above Vysya. He can maintain marital relations with Kshatriyas. In that Soota community, there was one Soota called Kichaka. His wife was Malavi. He begot 106 sons. The eldest was Simhabala. He was a mighty personality. His mother's sister's daughter was Sudheshna(cousin sister). Simhabala along with his 105brothers (As they are the sons of Kichaka, they are also called Kichakas) were living in the City of Virata along with their cousin sister, Sudheshna).
"What I am to do? Where shall I go? How can my purpose be effected? Kichaka is a mighty personality. There is none else except Bhimasena that can today accomplish the purpose on which my heart is set." thought Droupadi.
Afflicted with grief, she rose up at night and speedily proceeded towards the quarters of Bhimasena. She found Bheemasena sleeping on the couch in the cooking apartment.
"How can you sleep while that wretched Kichaka yet lived, having perpetrated today that foul act." Droupadi woke him up.

"Droupadi! for what purpose have you come here in such a hurry, dead of night. What is the reason? Has anybody seen you?" hurriedly asked Bheemasena.
" Knowing fully well what had happened, again if you ask, what can I tell. If you forget everything, what can I do? If you want to hear from me what had happened, I will tell you. One day Kichaka happened to see me while I was serving Sudheshna. He desired me with lust. I warned him that my five Gandharva husbands will slain you. He went away. Sudheshna sent me to fetch wine from his house. When I approached him for wine, he spoke some sweet words. When I refused, he became exceedingly enraged and intended to use violance. Understanding the intention of Kichaka, I speedily rushed to the place where the king was. The rest you have seen.
who else could bear such an humiliation when Dussaasana dragged me to the court in the midst of an assembly of courtiers calling me a slave. Who else could bear such an insult as the wicked Saindhava offered me while I was alone in the forest. Who else of my position could live having been kicked by Kichaka in the very sight of the King Virata.
How your elder brother, deprived of prosperity, sits dumb and even stopped you, while I was being insulted." said Droupadi.
"I would have caued carnage in Virata court but for the fact that Yudhishtira eyed me. I would have crushed the head of Kichaka then and there. If I did like that, our Ajnatavasa would have been foiled and we should again suffer Aranyavasa. Everybody will censure both of us. Therefore, we need not blame Yudhishtira for forbidding me. I will certainly slain Kichaka but it should be done secretely but not to the knowledge of one and all." said Bheema.
Droupadi realised her mistake. "Unable to bear my griefs, I spoke like that. I do not censure Yudhishtira. Yudhishtira is Ajatasatru. He is a virtuous person who performed Rajasooya Yaga. He is not an ordinary personality. It is paining that such a great virtuous personality is serving others. A huge personality like you, who killed Bakasura and Kimmeera, is fighting with tigers and lions for the pleasure of the king and his ladies. Arjuna who sat by the side of Indra, is serving the king as Bruhannala and teaching dance. Daily I am weeping while I see the valiant hero Nakula training the horses. Daily I am shedding tears when I see the beautiful Sahadeva rearing cows. I was born out of fire and was brought up by my parents with great love and affection. I married five valiant heroes. I became pure by performing Rajasooya Yaga sitting by the side of Yudhishtira. Even my mother in law, Kunti Devi, thinks twice to command me. Such a pricess like me, is now serving others as Sairandhri. Unless you kill that Kichaka, my mind will not rest in peace." said Droupadi.
"Droupadi! you need not tell this much. I will slain Kichaka. Our Ajnatavasa time is coming to an end Just few days remain. You do one thing. Renouncing your sorrow and grief, manage to have a meeting with Kicaka in the dancing hall (Nartana Sala). You must manage it so that others may not come along with him. I will kill him in Nartana Saala. This is final. It is already dawn. You please go away." said Bheema.
Droupadi went back to her apartments. Next day Kichaka woke up. He was fully afflicted with Madana's influence. He went to the palace of Sudheshna for the sake of Malini and accosted Sairandhri alone.
Malini remembered the words of Bheema. She pretended as if she does not see Kichaka. She was plucking the flowers.
"Malini! why you are rejecting me. Malini, throwing you down in the court, I kicked you in the presence of the King. Nobody came to your rescue even the King. This King Virata is, in name, only king of Matsya Kingdom. Commanding the forces of this realm, It is I who am the real lord of Matsya Kingdom. Do you accept me cheerfully, I shall become your slave." said Kichaka.
"You should know my condition. Though I am also afflicted with the shafts of Manmadha, I cannot reveal it, as i am a lady. Neither your friends nor your brothers should know your union with me. I am in terror of detection by those Gandharvas. Promise me this, I yield to you." said Malini in low tone.
"I will do even as you say. I will alone come to you for union with you, so that those Gandharvas may not come to know of this act of mine." said Kichaka cheerfully.
"Do you, when it is dark, go to the dancing hall where the girls dance during day. The Gandharvas do not know that place. We shall then without doubt escape all censures" told Malini.
"Promise I will be in dancing hall this very night waiting for your arrival" said Kichaka.
"Remember, you should come alone. None should accompany you" said Malini.
"Sure I will come alone." said Kichaka with overjoy.
"Anybody may notice us. please go away" so saying Malini went inside her apartment.
Kichaka's heart filled with joy. He returned back to his palace. Later, Malini went to the main kitcen and met Bheemasena. "As you said, I have given Kichaka to understand that our meeting will take place in the dancing hall, alone will he come at night to the dancing hall. Slay him there. Do you come to the dancing hall and take the life of Kichaka" asked Malini
"I swear unto you, by my brothers, I will slay Kichaka." said Bheema.
"But one doubt. Will he come to dancing hall alone or will he reveal the same to others. No he will not do like that. Droupadi! have you seen the joy in his face when you asked him to come to Dancing Hall. Yes. He will certainly come. He will touch me and caress me. I will catch him and kill him mercilessly. " said Bheema.
Droupadi was frightened that Bheema in his fit of anger may disclose their identity to others. "In your angry mood killing Kichaka, dont reveal our identify. Dharamaja and others may find fault with us for breaking Ajnatavasa. Our endeavour is to kill Kichaka unknown to others. If it is not possible, please stop this operation" said Droupadi.
"Droupadi! If you impose such conditions, how can I kill him. In a combat, while fighting with him, how can I do it secretely? However, I will keep your caution in mind and try to kill him unknown to others." said Bheema.
" Sudheshna might be enquiring about me. I will go." Droupadi went away.
Kichaka, in his palace, was waiting for the sunset. He was entertaining all kinds of doubts.
Whether Malini will come to dancing hall as promised!
Even if she comes, whether she will satisfy my lust!
She may change her mind before sunset!
Is it true that she has five gandharva husbands?
Suppose, while Malinig was coming to dancing hall, Sudheshna may entrust her with some work? If so, what will happen?
Suppose Malini does not come, how can I tolerate this lust, subjecting myself to the shafts of Manmadha.
How can I live without Malini?
No No Malini will certainly come. No doubt. When she spoke so many words and kindled fire of lust, how can she remain silent.
No, it is not like that. Why should I remain silent, suffering like this? I will go to her apartment, abduct her by force and enjoy sexual pleasures with her. Who will stop me?"
Kichaka was thinking like this, with a wavering mind. Kichaka was abusing Sun God for not setting early. He entertained a doubt whether Lord Brahma ordered Sun not to set on that day. He was looking at the sun eagerly for sunset.
As usual, Sun was set. The entire world was plunged in darkness. Droupadi went to the kitchen to remind Bhima. Bheema tucked a sari around his head. Bheema proceeded to dancing hall. Droupadi followed him. Both reaced dancing hall.
Bheema observed dancing hall on four sides. There was a long bed inside the dancing hall. Bhima asked Droupadi to hide behind a pillar unnoticed. He said on the bed covering himself with the saree.
Kichaka, having embellished his person as he chose, in a fully drunken state, came to the dancing hall at the appointed time with the hope of meeting Malini. Kichaka had seen Bhima sitting on the bed covered with a sari. Kichaka thought that she was Malini. He came near Bhima and touched him.
"Malini! Look at all these gifts brought for your sake. Look at me how handsome I am! Hitherto, I was attracted by several ladies. Now I am attracted by you. Why late! Come on let us enjoy!" Kichaka was madly talking under the influence of wine.
Bheema, with a female voice, said: "You are boasting yourself. You will never get such a beautiful lady like me. Dont compare me with others. If once you touch me, you will see what will happen! You will never have a chance to touch any other lady in your life. You will enjoy the result of touching me".
So saying Bheema rose to his feet, removed the sari, and roared like a lion. Bheema seized Kichaka by the hair of his head. Kichama quickly freed his hair and grasped the arms of Bhima. Kichaka thought that he is the gandharva husband of Malini.
Then between them there ensued a hand to hand encounter like a fight between two powerful elephants. Both were silently fighting with each without making any noise. Kichaka was under the apprehension that he may loose his prestige if his presence is known to one and all at dancing hall whereas Bhima also was under the apprehension that if he roars loudly, Ajnaatawasa will be broken. Both were fighting with equal strength and force.
Attacked thus in battle by powerful Bhima, Kichaka grew weak and began to tremble. He tugged at Bhima to the best of his power. Bheema quickly rose up forcibly, seized Kichaka by his hair, lifted him up and whirled him. Bheema grasped the throat of Kichaka with his arms and began to sqeeze.

Assailing with his knees, the waist of Kichaka, all the limbs of whose body broken into pieces. Bheema slay Kichaka as one would slay a beast. Bheeema began to roll him on the ground. Having crushed all his limbs and reduced him into a ball of flesh, the mighty Bheema showed him to Droupadi lighting a torch.
Droupadi looked at Kichaka. "O Kichaka! You have done all these things only to culminate like this. May your soul rest in peace" said Droupadi.
"Droupadi! are you satisfied. Is your desire fulfilled! Know yourself, no one will survive on this earth if he looks at you wickedly." said Bheema.
"Bheema Sena! how can I appreciate you for killing Kichaka in such a ghastly manner. My joy knows nobounds. You are no match to others." said Droupadi adoring Bheema.
"Drouapdi! it is not safe for us to remain here any longer." so saying Bheema went away swifly to his kitchen.
In this manner, Saint Vaisampaayana told Janamejaya about the killing of Kichaka by Bheema.

Saint Vaisampaayana told Janamejaya the storyof Mahbharata.
After killing Kichaka, Bheema Sena returned back to his Kitchen. He washed his body thoroughly. He applied perfumes to his body to avoid any smell of blood. He was sitting on a couch.
Droupadi, having caused Keechaka to be slain, had her grief removed and experienced a greatest delight. After confirming that Bheema Sena reached the main kitchen, she addressed the watchmen of the dancing hall (NartanaSaala) :
"Come and behold Kichaka who had violated after other people's wife, lie down here slain by my Gandharva Husbands " "
On hearing these words, the guards of the dancing hall came to the spot with torches in their hands. They behold the lifeless Kichaka, lying on the ground drenched with blood without arms and legs. They were filled with grief.
On hearing this news, all the brothers and relatives of Kichaka arrived at that place, beholding him there, began to wail aloud surrounding Kichaka on all sides. As they gazed at Kichaka, they were struck with amazement on seeing that superhuman act.
They said "Where is his neck, where are his legs. It appears that Gandharvas will kill persons like this." they thought. Then they proceeded to take the body outside for performing his rituals. They were making preparations for cremation. At that time, Droupadi stood there reclining on a pillar. Kichakas saw her. Their anger knew no bounds.
They exclaimed "Let this unchaste woman be slain for whom Kichaka has himself lost his life . Let us cremate her with Kichaka who had lusted after her."
Then they all went to King Vlirata. By that time, King Virata came to know about the death of Kichaka.
"O King Virata! it is for the sake of Sairandhri Kichaka has lost his life. Let him there be cremated along with her. You have to grant permission" asked Kichakas.
King Virata gave his assent to Sairandhri being burnt alive with Kichaka.
Then all the Kichakas approached the frightened Droupadi, seized her with violance and binding that Sairandhri and placing her upon the pyre, they all proceeded to the burial ground.
While thus forcibly being carried towards the burial ground by the Kichakas, Droupadi wailed aloud for the help of her husbands, calling them in their names, "Jaya! Jayanta! Vijaya! Jayatsena! Jayadbala!(The secret names of Pandavas). These Kichakas are taking me away to burial ground to burn me alive. Let those Gandharvas listen to my words. I am going to die" cried Droupadi aloud.
Hearing these sorrowful words, Bhima started immediately from the main kitchen, swelled his body, changed his attire, went out of the palace and reached the burial ground by a wrong route. He uprooted a large tree and kept it on his shoulders and waited for the arrival of Kichakas.
On arrival of Kichakas, Bheema rushed towards them. On seeing that Gandharva approaching them like a lion in fury, all the Kichakas, trembling with fear and greatly distressed, became panic struck and they addressed each other "the powerful Gandharva is coming here filled with rage with an uprooted tree in hand. Let Sairandhri be set free".
They immediately set Sairandhri free and ran away breathlessly towards the city. Seeing them running away, Bhima chased them and killed all of them with that huge tree and dispatched all of them to the abode of Yama.
Bheema set Droupadi free and told her "Droupadi! go back to city. You have no longer any fear. I myself will go back to the kitchen by another route."
On hearing that all the brothers of Kichaka were killed by Gandharva, King Virata was very much frightened. He immeidately went to his wife, Sudheshna, and told her

"When Sairandhri comes back, tell her these words. 'Go whereever you like. The king has been alarmed. This is the final word of the King".
Sudheshna said "Yes I will tell and send her away".
After that incident, Droupadi washed her limbs and clothes in water and took a head bath as she touched the dead body of Kichaka. She was walking along the main street.
On seeing her, all the citizens of Virata City were frightened, "Kichaka was killed only to stare at her. What about us. Let us run" and they fled away in all directions.
Droupadi went to the main kitchen. She looked at Bheema. "I bow to the Gandharva who has rescued me" she bowed before Bheema.
Hearing these words of Droupadi, "nobody will keep quiet when his wife is in danger. It is his duty to rescue her. It needs no appreciation or thanks giving" said Bheema.
Then she proceeded to the dancing hall. All the girls who were dancing there under the guidance of Brihannala, surrounded her. "By good luck, O Sairandhri, you have been saved from your dangers and you have returned safe. By goodluck also those Kichakas have been slain that had wronged you" said those girls in one voice.
Brihannala asked Droupadi "Oh Malini! What had happened? How those sinful wretches been slain? I wish to learn all these things from you exactly as it occurred?"
"You have been passing your days happily in the inner apartments of the girls. What concern have you with Sairandhri fate to say? You have no grief to bear that Sairandhri has to bear. It is for this you are asking me what had happened." said Droupadi.
"O Sairandhri! Brihannala has unparallelled sorrow of her own. She has become as low as a brute. Who will recognise the sorrow i am feeling in my heart. You know not my heart. You too has lived with us. When you are afflicted with misery, who is it that will not feel sorrow?" said Brihinnala with sorrowful voice.
"O Brihannala! It is not like that. I know your heart. You have to move here only as Brihannala. That is my wish" so saying Droupadi along with the other girls went to Queen Sudheshna.
Sudheshna received Malini and made her to sit by her side. "Sairandhri! You are unparallelled on earth in beauty. You are the object of desire for all men. Your husbands,Gandharvas, are exceedingly wrathful. The king has been filled with fear at this discomfiture at the hands of Gandharvas. Do you speedily go wherever you like. This is the command of the King Virata" told Sudheshna.
"Oh Sudheshna! Let the King suffer me to live here for only 13 days more. Without any doubt, the Gandharvas also will be highly obliged by this. My husbands will always help others and they will never harm anybody. Without any doubt, the king Virata, by doing this help, will reap great benefit. Therefore, don't feel any doubt in your mind. You have so far honoured me and treated me equivalent to you. Is it proper on your part to leave me like this" asked Droupadi.
With the words of Droupadi, Sudheshna moved. "Sairandhri! You can stay here as you like for the above period. But be careful about my husband and sons. You confine yourself to the inner apartments." said Sudheshna.
The people in the Matsyakingdom were talking in several ways. "Kichaka, the brother in law of Virata was killed for the sake of a woman. Soota race was completely vanished. Virata lost all his strength.. No body will save Matsya Kingdom".
The spies employed by Suyodhana to all the countries heard these words. In Hastinapura, Suyodhana assembled all elders, ministers and other kings. Bheeshma, Drona, Karna, Krupaacaarya, Dussaasana and other brothers of Suyodhana, assembled in the court. The spies who were sent in search of Pandavas reported thus:
"Great care has been taken in search of Pandavas. We have failed in discovering the track by which Pandavas might have gone. No traces have yet been found. It seems they have perished without leaving any mark behind. The chariots used by them reached Dwaaraavati without Pandavas. Neither Pandavas nor Droupadi are not in the city of Dwaaravati.

There is another important matter. Kichaka, the Commander of Matsya Kingdom by whom Trigartas were repeatedly vanquished, now lie low on the ground along with his brothers, slain by invisible Gardharvas during the hours of darkness."
Having heard these words of his spies, Suyodhana addressed the assembly: "Pandavas have completed 12years of Aranya vasa. They are in the 13th year which they are to pass undiscovered by us all. The greater part already expired. What remains is much smaller. They will then have fulfil their pledge. They will then return like mighty elephants with wrath. Hence, it is better to make such efforts without loss of time, to discover them and send them again to woods." said Suyodhana.
Then Karna rose to his feet and said: "Let other spies, able and more cunning and capable of accomplishing their object, quickly go. Let them. well disguised, wander through kingdoms and provinces, in the inner parts of palaces, in shrines and holy spots, Pandavas should be searched after with eagerness". said Karna.
Then Dussaasana expressed his opinion: "It is my plea that they have been devoured by wild beasts in the forests. They have been perished for eternity. Therefore, dispelling all anxieties from your heart, enjoy the royal pleasures." said Dussaasana.

Then Dronacharya, their Teacher, said: "Suyodhana! Persons like Pandavas never perish or undergo discomfiture. Brave, intelligent and skilled in every science and with senses under control, virtuous, grateful and obedient to their elder brother Yudhishtira, never perish in this way. This is what I see from my mind. Do quickly, without loss of time, what could now be done."
Then their Grand Father Bhishma rose: "Suyodhana! The words of Dronacarya are approved by me. I have no hesitation in saying so. Nothing will happen to them. Both Pandavas and Kouravas are equal to me. Kindly listen carefully what I say. Dharmaja is virtuous and truthful. The ruler of city or province where King Yudhishtira resides, cannot have any misforture. Charitable, liberal and humble and modest must the people be of the country where Yudhishtira resides. The people of the place where Yudhishtira is, cannot be envious or malicious or vain or proud. The clouds without doubt pour abundant rains and furnish with good harvest, and the country will be without droughts. Where King Yudhishtira resides , the cows of all kinds will be plentiful and that country will be flodded with milk and paddy in abundance. Therefore, Yudhishtira will be living in close disguise in regions whose characteristics I have now described. Do without loss of time what you may think beneficial, if you have faith in me." said Bhishma.
Then Krupaachaarya said: "What the aged Bhishma said concerning Pandavas is reasonable, well suited to the occasion. When time comes for the reappearance of Pandavas, who, having entered the forests, are now passing their days in close disguise, you should ascertain your strength both in your own kingdom and in those of other kingdoms. Without doubt, the return of Pandavas is certain. When their promised term of exile is over, Pandavas, endued with immeasurable prowess, will come here bursting with energy. Do you therefore conclude an advantageous treaty with them. Or address yourself to increase your forces and your treasury. You reckon your strength in respect of your allies, weak and strong, ascertaining the efficiencies and weaknesses. Assuming for a moment that Pandavas are dead, yet, we have to strengthen our army even to fight with the other kings who are in favour of Pandavas. Hence strengtenening our army is a must. Hence do the needful." said Krupaacaarya.
Having heard all the words spoken by elders and Gurus, Suyodhana addressed the assembly.
" I heard that Kichaka, Bheema, Salya and Balarama are equal in strength and are experts in wresling and dual fights. There is none on earth who can defeat them. One has to defeat the other among themselves. We are informed by spies that Kichaka, the Chief Commander of Forces of Matsya Kingdom was slain by Gandharvas on account of one woman. Kichaka must have been killed by one of the other three. Balarama and Salya are far away. Therefore there is no chance of their killing Kichaka nor they have any reason to kill Kichaka. The remaining is Bhima.
Besides that, Kichaka was killed on account of a woman. That woman might have been Droupadi. The other kichakas who are equal in strength also were killed. It is possible only for Bhima and none else.
Apart from that, all the qualities and characteristics as told by Bheeshma are in abundance in Matsya Kingdom. Therefore, it is certain, that Pandavas are living in disguise in Matsya Kingdom. Virata is our enemy. Therefore, if we invade Matsya Kingdom and caputre their cows, Virata will certainly attack us. If Pandavas are there, they will certainly come out to help Virata. We can discover them and send them back to forests as they have violated the agreement. Even if Pandavas are not there, we can plunder the wealth of Virata. In any manner, we will be benefited. Therefore, this is the task before us. If it is agreeable to all of you, we can try this" said Suyodhana.
On hearing this, Susarma, the King of Trigartha, confided with Dussaasana and Karna, rose to his feet and said:
"O Suyodhana! My kingdom has many a time been forcibly invaded by the King of Virata with the help of the mighty Kichaka who was the Commander of the King Virata. Now Kichaka is dead. Please allow me to invade Virata Kingdom. I will wage war with King Virata and vanquish him. I will capture his cows. If Pandavas are there living in disguise, I will discover them". said Susarma.
Karna also supported Susarma. "Suyodhana! Susarma's words are apt and correct. Please permit him towage war against King Virata" said Karna.
After thinking for a while, Suyodhana said: "Dussaasana! The assembly has accorded sanction to you to wage war against King Virata. Be ready with our mighty army. Our attack will be two fold. First Trigartha army will proceed towards Matsya Kingdom. Next day, our army will proceed." said Suyodhana.
Dussaasana said "I will do so".
Then King Suyodhana explained his strategy to the elders and king assembled there.
"First Susarma, along with his army, will capture all the cattle of Virata. King Virata will naturally proceed against Susarma to rescue the cows. Next day, we will capture cows on the other side. As there will be none in city to rescue the cows, Pandavas will naturally come out to fight against us. On the coming Bahula Ashtami, Susarma will capture the cows of Virata. Next day, ie, Navami Day we will capture the cows on the other side. This is final" said Suyodhana.
Susarma was very happy. But nobody knows that the period of one year Ajnaata Vaasa has come to end.
Susarma, the king of Trigartha, accompanied by his mighty infantry of terrible prowess marched towards the south easten direction, intending to wage hostilities with the desire of seizing his cattle in large number.
The guards of the cattle stationed there, were fighting with the Susarma army. But they could not attack them as the Susarma's army was large in number. All the guards fled away and reported the matter to King Virata.
"O King Virata! Susarma, the King of Trigartha, came upon us with his mighty army and captured our cattle and taking them away. You have to come and save the cattle." prayed the guards.
Virata was astonished "What is this? Are you telling the truth? Susarma many a time was defeated at our hands. How dare he come again to fight with us?"
Then he ordered all his Ministers and Commanders "We have to now fight with Susarma, the King of Trigartha. Otherwise, we have to loose our cattle wealth. Therefore make immediate arrangements to wage war against Susarma" ordered Virata.
In the meanwhile he was collecting information from his spies in which direction Susarma was proceeding with cattle. Sataaneeka, the elder brother of Virata and Madiraasva, Soorya Datta, the others brothers of Virata also accompanied Virata along with their mighty army. Sankha, son of Virata was blowing his conch fiercely.
Dharmaja was observing all these war arrangements. He approached King Virata "O King Virata! previously, I learnt about warfare through a sage and through him I acquired many Astras and Sastras. I got some skill in fighting in battle. When the King is going for war, it is not proper on my part to keep quiet. Hence I will also accompany you" said Dharmaja.
Virata accepted his request. Then Dharmaja called his four brothers. "O King Virata! He is our cook, Valala. He is an expert in wrestling. He may be helpful to in the war. He is Tamagrandhi, horse trainer and horse keeper. He is Tantripala, our cattle keeper. Their services may be necessary for us. Therefore, I thought it fit to permit them also to accompany us to the war field" said Dharmaja.
King Virata ordered Sataaneeka to provide chariots, bows, arrows and other war material for all the five. Then all of them proceeded towards southwards and met Susarma and his army.
The mighty armed warriors on both sides furiously assailed one another in that conflict. There was a fierce battle between Virata and Susarma. Sataaneeka attacked the army of Susarma and slain hundreds of enemies . Madiraasva crushed the army of Susarma. Sooryadatta also attacked Susarma with his mighty army.Virata was fighting with his enemies like a powerful youth. He pierced Sumarma with ten shafts and each of his five horses with five shots. Susarma army turned back unable to attack Virata army .
Then the sun was set. The entire war field became dark. All of them stopped fighting. After sometime, there was the rise of eighth day moon. In that moon light, both the army began to fight with each other.
Susarma with his younger brother and accompanied by his army rushed towards Matsya king and defeated the whole army of Virata. Then Susarma impetuously rushed towards Virata himself. His two brothers having severely slain Virata's charioteer and also the soldiers on either side and rear. Susarma took Virata captive alive, dragged him on the ground, tied him and kept Virata on his chariot and sppedily rushed out of the field.
When the powerful Virata was taken captive, the Trigartha army was cheerful and began to slain the soldiers of Virata. The Virata's army began to flee in fear in all directions.
On seeing this, Dharmaja called Bhima. "Bheemaa! Vitara has been taken by Susarma. As we have so far lived happily in Virata City, having every desire of ours gratified, it is for us to discharge that debt. Do you rescue him so that he may not fall under the power of the enmy."asked Dharmaja
"O brother Dharmaja! I will liberate Virata at your command. Kindly stay aside along with Nakula and Sahadeva and witness my prowess today uprooting this mighty tree of huge trunk, I will rout the enemy." said Bheema.

Dharmaja immediately stopped Bhima: "Bheema! Don't! Don't commit such a rash act. Let the tree stand there. You must not do such things in superhuman manner. By means of this act, people will recognise you and say "This is Bhima". Therefore, take some weapon as bow and arrow or sword and liberate the king without giving anybody the means of knowing you truly. Nakula and Sahadeva will defend your wheels. Go and liberate the King" said Dharmaja. Bhimasena obeyed the directions of Dharmaja.
Dharmaja stood in front of the army and commanded the soldiers. He started to fight with Susarma. Susarma fiercely attacked Dharmaja with bow and arrows. Then Bhima took out bow and arrows and rushed furiously towards Susharma and assailed him. Susarma was fighting with Dharmaja. Within the twinkling of an eye, Bhima destroyed the chariot of Susarma. Hundreds of chariots of the Susarma army were overthrown by Bhima. While Dharmaja was fighting with Susarma, Virata freed himself, jumped out of the car, took out a mace and beat Susarma with the mace.
On seeing this, the army of Matsya kingdom returned back and began to fight with Susarma army. Bhima also attacked Susarma, killed his chariot driver and his guards. Bhima dragged Susarma from the chariot.
Susarma tried to run away. Bhima impetuously rushed towards Susarma, seized Susarma by his tuft and lifting him up in warth, dashed him down on the ground. The mighty armed Bhima kicked Susarma on the head and placing his knee on his breast, dealt him severe blows. Susarma became senseless.
On seeing this, the Susarma army, stricken with panic, fled away in all directions. Bheema came back to his brother, Dharmaja. Dharmaja, along with his brothers stood before King Virata with folded hands. King Virata gratified those warriors.
"You have saved my life, kingdom and cattle. By your prowess only I am now crowned with victory. How can I express my gratitude? You have saved this life. You have conquered this kingdom. This is all yours. Do you agree to be here happily enjoying all pleasures.: said Virata.
"O King Virata! We are well pleased with all that you have said. We, however, have been much gratified that you have to day been freed from your enemies. You need not praise me for this small help." said Dharmaja.
"O Kanka! Is it doing help to me? Or is it a reciprocation for what I have done to you, by giving shelter in my kingdom? Or is it a mercy showered upon me? Or you intend to get name and fame by vanquishing my enemies? What is the reason? Afterall, he is a cook and wrestler? Oh what a prowess he has! He is the only man who saved me today from my enemies. Those cute boys. Where are they? Are they horse keepers and cattle keepers. They are only two warriors who fiercely fought with enemies but remained unhurt.
A person who helps in need is a real friend. Kankaa! I cannot leave you and your friendship. Choose whatever you like! Elephants, horses, gold, diamonds, jewellery, beautiful ladies, royal pleasures. Your will. Choose whatever you like. I will place them before you." said Virata.
"O King Virata! We are very well pleased with the delightful words that you have spoken. You can honour us after we return back to our capital. Now I request you to kindly liberate Susarma, the king of Trigarta. Let him go freely along with his relatives, friends and army. Let a messenger now, at your command, speedily go to the city in order to communicate and proclaim your victory." said Dharmaja.
Honoring these words of Dharmaja, King Virata turned to Susarma "You are freed. Your relatives friends and army are liberated. Go away as a free man." ordered King Virata.
Susarma, overwhelmed with shame, hung down his head and liberated, saluted Virata and departed from that place.
King Virata called messengers and ordered "Do you go to the City and proclaim my victory in battle and let the ladies and courtesans decked in ornaments came out of the city with every kind of musical instruments to welcome us" ordered Virata.
The messengers departed with cheerful hearts to the city to proclaim the victory of the King. King Virata stayed there for that night and returned back to city along with his army with great victory.

Saint Vaisampaayana continued to tell Janamejaya the story of Mahabharata.
While Susharma, along with his army, caputured the cows of Virata and while Virata was fighting with Susharma on southern side, Suyodhana along with Bheeshma, Drona, Krupaacaarya, Asvathaama, accompanied by Karna, and Dussasana, invaded the dominions of Virata and captured the cows. They have driven away the cowherds and the army guarding the cows, and forcibly took away the cows.
The chief of the cowherds and the chief of the army stationed there greatly frightened, speedily proceeded to the City of Virata. And beholding the proud son of Matsya, named Bhuminjaya,(also called Uttara Kumara) he told him everything about the seizure of the royal kine.
And he said, " O Prince, the Kauravas are taking away sixty thousand kine. Rise, therefore, for brining back thy cattle. Indeed, you are alone in the empty city. The king (your father) boast of you before others, saying, 'My son, equal unto me, is a hero and is the supporter of the glory of my race. My son is a warrior skilled in arrows and weapons and is always possessed of great courage.'-- let the words of that your father be true! Even like Arjuna, you are , without doubt, the refuge of those dwelling within these dominions. Indeed, we, the subjects of this realm, have our protector in you. Therefore, bring back the cows after vanquishing the Kurus" said the Chief of cowherd.
Thus addressed by the chief of cowherd in the presence of the females, the prince indulging in self-commendation within the female apartments, Uttara said,
"Firm as I am in the use of the bow, I would set out this very day in the track of the cows if only some one skilled in the driving of horses becomes my charioteer. I do not, however, know the man who may be my charioteer. I will bring back the kine this very moment, affrighting in battle Duryodhana and Bhishma and Karna and Kripa and Drona with his son, and other mighty bowmen assembled for fight. I do not, however, know the man who may be my charioteer. My own charioteer was killed in the great battle. I will immediately penetrate into the midst of the Kourava army, and will bring back the cows, having vanquished the Kurus who are feeble in strength and weak in weapons. The assembled Kurus shall witness my prowess today. And they shall say one another, 'Is it Arjuna himself who is opposing us?'
Look therefore, without delay, for a charioteer for me."said Uttara boasting high of himself.
Sairandhri (Droupadi) on hearing these words of UttaraKumara, comparing himself with Arjuna, smiled for herself. Immediately she approached Brihannala and told him what had happened.
Arjuna having calculated carefully the period they had spent in forests and in disguise, found that the thirteen years period was completed on the previous day itself and decided that that was the proper time to expose themselves in their true forms.
Arjuna said: "Do you, at my request, say to Uttara without delay, " Brihannala was formerly the accomplished charioteer of Arjuna. He will be your charioteer. It was by him that the reins were held of Arjuna's excellent horses when Agni consumed the forest of Khandava. In fact, there is no charioteer equal unto him." You should see that I should be the charioteer for UttaraKumara." said Brihannala.
Accordingly, Sairandhri approached Princess Uttara and said:
"It appears that your brother is in search of a charioteer. Your teacher, Brihannala got excellent experience in driving chariot. He was the charioteer for Arjuna while Khandava forest was consumed by Agni. Kindly tell Uttara Kumara about this" requested Sairandhri.
Without delay, Uttara approached her brother Uttara Kumara and told him about Brihannala. Uttara Kumara laughed loudly.
"O Sairandhri, why you are heckling me like this. I never inclined even to look at the face of Brihannala. How can I accept him as my charioteer in the battle with kouravas. All will laugh at me if Brihannala drives my chariot. Oh! what is this. Is there such a draught in our realm for charioteers" exclaimed Uttara Kumara.
Then Sairandhri said, "Brihannala, will without doubt obey the words of Uttara, your younger sister. If he consents to be your charioteer, you will, without doubt, return, having vanquished the Kurus and rescued your cows. For some reason orother, he may be moving here in this netural sex. That does not mean that he lost his vigour and valour' said Sairandhri.
Uttara Kumara spoke unto his sister, 'Go yourself, and bring Brihannala here?'
Uttara hastily went to the dancing-hall where Brihannala was staying in disguise and bowed before Brihannala."
Brihannala blessed Uttara and asked her "What brings you here? Why are you in such a hurry. Tell me" asked Brihannala.
"The cows of this realm are being driven away by the Kurus and it is to conquer them, my brother, Uttara Kumara, is ready to attack them but his charioteer was dead in a battle and there is none equal to that charioteer that can act as my brother's charioteer. Sairandhri said that you are a skilled charioteer and you were formerly the favourite charioteer of Arjuna and it was with you Arjuna had alone subjugated the whole earth. Do you therefore act as the charioteer of my brother. By this time our cows have surely been driven away by the Kurus to a long distance. I am asking this favour out of affection. If you donot accept my words, I will give up my life." said Uttara.
Brihannala smiled at her and said "I doubt I had such a skil in charioteering. Any how, as you are requesting, I will come. Let us go" said Brihannala and followed Uttara to the presence of Prince Uttara Kumara.
Beholding Arjuna from a distance, Uttara Kumara said "O Brihannala! I heard that with you as a charioteer, Dhananjaya had gratified Agni at Khandava forest and subjugated the whole world. Sairandhri spoke about you. Do you, therefore, act as my charioteer, in rescuing our cows." asked Uttara Kumara. Arjuna obediently replied "What ability I have to act as a charioteer in the field of battle? If it is song or dance of musical instruments or such otherthings, I can entertain you but where is my skill for becoming a charioteer" said Brihannala.
"Brihannala! I heard much about you. Without loss of time, take the reins of my excellent horses and be my charioteer. Be ready for the war" ordered Uttara Kumara.
Pretending as if he was unwilling, Brihannala accepted his offer. Although Arjuna was acquainted with everything, he made many mistakes for the sake of fun. He put the coat of mail on his body by raising it upwards, the maidens burst into laughter. Uttara Kumara himself equipped Brihannala with a costly coat of mail.
Brihannala hoisted the lion flag. He set out necessary bows and arrows, swords etc necesaary for the battle.
Uttara asked her brother "Do you bring for our dolls while coming back, various kinds of good and fine cloths after vanquishing the Kurus" asked Uttara.

"O Princecess Uttara! Uttara Kumara will vanquish those mighty warriors in battle and will certainly bring excellent and beautiful clothes for your dolls" said Brihannala.
Then Uttara Kumara ordered Brihannala "proceed where the Kurus are. I will defeat them and rescue our cows and return to the capital." said Uttara Kumara.

On hearing these words of Prince Uttara Kumara, Brihannala drove the chariot with great speed and sighted the army of the powerful Kurus.
On looking at that mighty army, abounding in elephants, horses and chariots, protected by Karna and Duryodhana and Kripa and Bheeshma, with Drona and Asvatthaama, Prince Uttara Kumara agitated with fear spoke to Brihannala.
"I dare not fight with the Kurus. See the sweatting on my body. I am incapable of battling with this countless Kuru army. I do not venture to penetrate into the army of Kurus. My mind is too much perturbed by the very sight of the foe on the battle field. My hair have stood on their ends. My body is shivering and I am fainting with fear." said Uttara Kumara with feeble voice.

"Why do you look so pale through fear and enhance the joy of our enemies. How can I drive the chariot into the mighty Kuru army. Let us rescue the cows first. Having, at the time of setting out, talked before both men and women so highly of your manliness, why would you desist from the fight? If you should return home without recapturing the cows, even women, will laugh at you." said Brihannala.
"My father has gone out to meet the Trigartas, taking with him his whole army, leaving me in the empty city. There are no troops to assist me. Alone and a mere boy who has not undergone much exercise in arms, I am unable to encounter these innumerable warriors and all skilled in weapons. Do you, therefore, O Brihannala, cease to advance!'" said Prince Uttara Kumara.
"Sairandhri applauded me so high in respect of my skill in driving chariots. You also praised me. Atleast, it is for those praises, I cannot return to the city without having rescued the cows." said Brihannala.

"Let the Kurus rob the Matsyas off all their wealth. Let men and women, O Brihannala, laugh at me. Let my cows perish, let the city be a desert. Let me stand exposed before my father. Still there is no need of battle." said Uttara Kumara shivering with fear.
Saying this, that much frightened prince jumped down from his chariot, and throwing down his bow and arrows began to flee.
Brihannala, coming down from that excellent chariot, ran after that prince thus running away, his own long braid and pure red garments fluttering in the air. And some soldiers, not knowing that it was Arjuna who was thus running with his braid fluttering in the air, burst out into laughter at the sight.
Brihannala caught the Prince Uttara Kumaara. "Brihannala! please leave me. I will give you gold coins and gold chariots and elephants. My mother will be waiting for me I have to go. Please leave me" said Uttara Kumara.
"O Prince! if you are unable to fight with Kurus, be my chariot driver. I will fight with Kurus and rescue the cattle." said Brihannala.
So saying, Brihannala brought Uttara Kumara to the chariot and drove the chariot to the Sami Tree where they concealed all their arms, bows and arrows.
Beholding this, all the great car-warriors of the Kurus with Bhishma and Drona at their head, became frightened at heart, suspecting that man of third sex to be Dhananjaya. Several inauspicious indications are also seen, suspecting that a great danger is ahead.

"Stay with vigilance, Protect your own selves and array the troops in order of battle. Stand firm, expecting a terrible slaughter, and guard the cattle" Drona cautioned the army.
Drona looked at Bhishma and said "He appears to be so proud We have to find out who he is"
Bheeshma told Suyodhana, to the hearing of Drona.
"Suyodhana! we have crossed the intricate point which is favourable to our enemies. Now it is the time to show our prowess. We need not worry about our enemies".
Drona understood the inner meaning of those words.
(The inner meaning may be like this:
"We have crossed the intricate point which is favourable to our enemies" means "Pandavas successfully completed the 13 years period which is favourable to Suyodhana",
(2) "Now it is the time to show our prowess." means "It is time to come out in their true forms as Pandavas",
(3) "We need not worry about our enemies" means "Even if they come out, Suyodhana cannot do anything as they have successfully completed the Aranya and Ajnaatavaasa."

"O Suyodhana! Put to great hardship in the forest, Arjuna is coming in wrath. Vanquishing us, he will surely take away the cattle today. I do not see any hero in our army who can withstand him.
Hearing these words, Karna grew angry and said, "Being an elder, you always censure us by speaking on the virtues of Arjuna. Are you a warrior in this army? Is Arjuna such a great warrior? Even if Arjuna comes, I will attack him with single hand" said Karna.

And Duryodhana said:"If this is Arjuna, O Radheya, then my purpose has already been fulfilled, for, if traced out, the Pandavas shall have to wander for twelve years again in forests. Or, if this one be any other person in a eunuch's garb, I will soon conquer him."
On hearing these words of Suyodhana, Bhishma and Drona and Kripa and Drona's son all applauded his manliness!'"
Arjuna drove the chariot to the Sami Tree and stopped there.
"Prince Uttara Kumara! these bows are unable to bear my strength. In this tree are tied the bows and arrows and banners and excellent coats of mail of the heroic sons of Pandu, viz., Yudhishthira and Bhima and Arjuna and the twins. There also is that bow of great energy, the Gandiva of Arjuna, which singly is equal to many thousands of other bows. Climb this tree and bring Gandeeva.
Uttara Kumara said, 'It appears to be a corpse tied in this tree. How can I, being a prince by birth, touch it with my hands?
"O Uttara Kumara! Do not fear, there are only bows in this tree and not corpses. Why should I, O prince, make you to do such a reproachable deed?'said Arjuna.

Having satisfied with the words of Brihanala, Uttara Kumara climbed up the tree and untied the corpse like bundle. All the arms appear to UTTara Kumara as great serpants. Uttara Kumara shivered with fear.
"O Brihannala! here are serpants not bows and arrows" cried Uttara Kumara.
Brihannala said "Dont worry! they will appear to others like that." and prayed them to appear in their original form.
Now Uttara Kumara could see Gaandeevam.
"O Brihannala! here is a big bow like a big serpant. Who will use it?" asked Uttara Kumara with great surprise.
"That is Gaandeevam. Arjuna will use it. With the power of Gandeevam, Arjuna could conquer all Devatas and Danavas.
In the past, Shiva held it first for a thousand years. Afterwards Prajapati held it for five hundred and three years. After that Sakra, for five and eighty years. And then Soma held it for five hundred years. And after that Varuna held it for a hundred years. Partha obtained this beautiful bow from Varuna. And finally Partha that is myself, will hold it for five and sixty years." said Arjuna.
Arjuna also explained Uttara Kumara about other weapons, bows and arrows held by other Pandavas. Uttarakumara entertained a doubt.
"Brihannalaa! where are that Arjuna, and Yudhishthira,and Nakula, and Sahadeva, and Bhimasena, the sons of Pandu? Having lost their kingdom at dice, Pandavas are no longer heard of. Where also is Draupadi, who followed the sons of Pandu after their defeat at dice to the forest? After keeping their weapons on this tree, where have they gone?. They are my relatives. If you know, kindly tell me" asked Uttara Kumara.
"You need not worry about them, said Arjuna. "I am Arjuna, called also Partha. Your father's courtier is Yudhishthira and your father's cook Vallava is Bhimasena, the groom of horses is Nakula, and Sahadeva is spending time as cowherd. Sairindhri is Draupadi, for whose sake the Kichakas have been killed." said Arjuna.
Uttara Kumara was very much astonished. Still small doubt was lingering in his mind.
"Brihannalaa! I would believe all this if you can enumerate the ten names of Arjuna, previously heard by me!" asked Uttara Kumara.
Arjuna said, 'I will, O son of Virata, tell you my ten names. Listen and compare them with what you have heard before.
They are Arjuna, Falguna,Partha, Jishnu, Kiriti, Swetavahana, Bibhatsu, Vijaya, Krishna, Savyasachi and Dhananjaya.These are my ten names." said Arjuna.
Still the clouds of doubt did not vanish in his mind.
"I have heard before about the origin of the ten names of that hero, and I can put faith in you words if you can tell me all about them." asked Uttara Kumara.
"Arjuna said thus:
They called me Dhananjaya because I lived in the midst of wealth, having subjugated all the countries and taking away their treasures.

They called me Vijaya because when I go out to battle with invincible kings, I never return without vanquishing them.
I am called Swetavahana because when battling with the foe, white horses are always yoked to my chariot.
They call me Falguna because I was born on the Uttara Falguni star.
I am named Kiriti, for a Crown having been placed of on my head by Indra during my encounter with the powerful Danavas.
I am known as Bibhatsu for my never having committed a detestable deed on the battle-field.
Though both of my hands are capable of drawing the Gandiva, I mostly use my left hand often. Hence I am known as Savyasachi.
They call me Arjuna because my complexion(white) is very rare within the four boundaries of the earth and because also my acts are always stainless.
I am known by the name of Jishnu, because I am unapproachable and incapable of being kept down, whenever anybody causes any harm to my brother Yudhishtira.
My mother Kunti has got another name Pridha. Hence I am called as Pardha.
While I was guarding Khandava forest with the help of Krishna, and defeated Devatas, Brahma and Siva awarded me the eleventh title, Krishna and also divine Astras and Sastras were given to me.
When I killed Nivata and Kavacha Asuras, Indra awaded me with this Crown.

All the Devatas gave me this Conch. Hence it is called Devadatta.
When Chitrasena, a gandharva, caught Suyodhana and took him away, I fought with that Gandharva and rescued Suyodhana.
Hence I promise that I will fight with Kuru army and rescue our cows. Dont worry." said Arjuna.
Now Bhuminjaya, called Uttara Kumara, completely surrendered to Arjuna. Uttara Kumara approached Arjuna, saluted him.
"It is my good luck that I have seen you here as my charioteer. All my fears have been dispelled. I spoke much ill of you. Kindly excuse me." said Uttara Kumara.
Arjuna hugged Uttara Kumara with love and affection.
"Kindly mount this chariot and I will be your charioteer. Command me. I will driveryour chariot. It is my long cherished desire that I should drive your chariot. It is now fulfilled. I am so fortunate" said Uttara Kumara.
"I am pleased with you, Uttara Kumara. You have no cause of fear. I will fight with your enemies in the battle." said Arjuna.
Then Uttara Kumara speedily alighted from the tree bringing with him the weapons of Arjuna.

"Uttara Kumara! I will fight with Kuru army. Let your fearsbe dispelled" said Arjuna.
"O Arjuna! I am no longer afraid of this Kuru army. I know your prowess in the battle. But I would like to know one thing. By what distressful circumstances could a person of such handsome personality could become deprived of manhood and dwelling in the guise of third sex."asked Uttara Kumara.

"I am observing this vow for one year agreeable to the command of my elder brother, Yudhishtira. I am not one of the neuter sex. When I visited Indra lOka, I refused to have sexual contact with Urvasi and she cursed me to be of neuter sex. Devendra blessed me that it will be useful during the period of our disguise. Hence I am acting as Brihannala" said Arjuna.
"Arjuna! all my fears and suspicions have been dispelled now. What shall I Do? Command me now." said Uttara Kumara
Then Arjuna seated on the chariot. All his weapons were restored to him. The conch Devadattam came to his hand. Partha received all his weapons.

"Uttara Kumara! It is already late. Take our chariot around this Sami Tree and proceed towards the Kuru Army." said Arjuna.
Accordingly, Uttara Kumara drove the chariot around the Sami Tree and proceeded further.

Arjuna stringing his Gaandeeva, twanged it. The twang of Gandeeva was as loud as a thunderbolt filling the earth violently. Arjuna blew Devadatta with thundering sound.

On hearing the sound twang of Gaandeeva, and Devadattam, the horses tied to the chariot dropped down on the ground on their knees. Uttara Kumara also was greatly frightened, sat down on the chariot.
Arjuna got down the chariot, took the reigns himself, raising the horses and placed them in their proper positions.

He embraced Uttara Kumara and encouraged him "Fearnot! Kumara! you might have heard many sounds of conches. Why are you so frightened on hearing the sound of my conch. You are a warrior, not an ordinary person" spoke Arjuna.
"O Arjuna! I heard many sounds of conches. But never before I heard such a thunderous sound. Nor have I heard also the twang of a bow such as Gaandeevam. With the sound of this conch, the twang of this bow and the cries of the creatures around the banner—Kapi Dhvaja, my mind is greatly disturbed I am very much confused. My ears also have been deafened with the sound of Gaandeeva." said Uttara Kumara.
Arjuna smiled at Uttara Kumara and again blew the conch.
On hearing the terrible sound of Devadattam, Drona said:
"Look at that chariot. Hear that sound of conch! Is it not Devadatta? Hear the sound of that bow. Is it not Gaandeeva? Look at that crown. Is it not the one given to Arjuna by Indra. This warrior can be none else than Arjuna. Move quickly. Let us attack Arjuna" and looking at Krupacharya and Asvathaama, Drona said:
"First King Suyodhana will proceed first with part of army. Then we will send the cows with some army. At the back, we will move. If at all Arjuna comes, we will fight with him." said Drona.
On hearing these words of Acharya Drona, Suyodhana said:
" Even this was the pledge of the sons Pandavas that if defeated at the dice game, they would reside to our knowledge in woods for twelve years, and one more year unknown to us. That thirteenth year, instead of being over, is yet running. Arjuna, who is still to live undiscovered, has appeared before us. And if Arjuna has come before the term of exile is at end, the Pandavas shall have to pass another twelve years in the woods. Whether it is due to forgetfulness (on their part) induced by desire , or whether it is a mistake of ours, it is for Bhishma to calculate the shortness or excess of the promised period.
As regards ourselves, we have come here to fight with the Matsyas and to seize their cows stationed towards the north. If,in he meanwhile, if Arjuna comes, we will fight with him.
But, be it the king of the Matsyas or Arjuna, we must all fight with him. Why are all these of foremost car-warriors,--Bhishma and Drona and Kripa and Vikarna and Drona's son,--now sitting on their cars, panic-stricken?

At present there is nothing better than fighting. Therefore, make up your minds. If, for the cattle we have seized, an encounter takes place with the Indra or even with Yama, we will fight.
How can a single Arjuna can fight with the vast Kuru army? Why Drona should praise Arjuna beore me? It is not good and proper on his part to praise Arjuna like a Vandi. Any how, Dronacharya will be supervising the warfare from a distance. Let us not consult him about the warfare.
It is better to talk with Dronacarya while learning archery or preaching morals but not during warfare. Any how, he will not fight but only extend his best wishes for us from behind" said Suyodhana.

On hearing these words, Asvathaama, son of Drona grew angry.
"O King Suyodhana! Just we caught the cows and fought with the cowherds. We have not yet reached Hasinapura with the cows. We have not yet fought with enemies. Even those who got victory also will never speak like this.
Suyodhana! afterall, you grabbed their kingdom in dice game. But this is battle field. You cannot play dice game here.
Have you dragged Droupadi to assembly only after defeating Pandavas?
Was it not the crooked idea of Sakuni. Let Sakuni come now and attack Arjuna on your behalf.
Only to wreak vengeance, Arjuna is coming upon you. You have insulted your Guru but can you attack Arjuna? Anybody can praise any hero with prowess. Arjuna is no other than his dearest student in archery skills. Is it not proper on part of Guru to praise his darest student?
After receiving all these rebukes, my father Drona may fight; but I will never fight.
Listen Suyodhana! even if wild fire breaks, and Mrutyu wields his strings, atleast remains will be there. But the arrows of Arjuna will cause total disaster. Your crooked ideas will never work out here. Arjuna never throws dice. He only will shot arrows through Gaandeevam.
Anyhow, we have come here only to capture cows and fight with Matsya army but not to fight with others. If Arjuna comes, we will never come near him." said Asvathaama firmly.
On hearing these words Karna grew angry.
"Why we have come here? Only to caputre cows of Virata and even if Pandavas come, to undiscover them and send them back to forests. Now we are frightening about arjuna. It is not good. You are making King Suyodhana mad. If you are fearstricken, keep yourself away. I will resist Arjuna.
How many are required to resist one single Arjuna. I am, by no means, inferior to Arjuna.I will break his flag Kapidwaja and drive all the demons around it. I will kill his charioteer. I will slain Arjuna with my arrows. You just witness my prowess.
On completion of 12 years period in woods and one year exile, he is fighting for the first time. I am also a mighty warrior in Kuru army. We will fight with each other.
To discharge my debt to Suyodhana,
To fulfill my pledge that I should kill Arjuna in battle field,
To decide who is greater amongst us,
To show all my archery skills got through Parasurama, time has come.
Anybody who is willing to see our dual fight fight may remain here or they may go to Hastinapura along with cows" said Karna.
Then Krupaachaarya spoke to Karna:
"Karna! you are always inclined to war but do not know about the true nature of things. There are various kinds of expedients inferrable from the scriptures. Of these, a battle has been regarded by those acquainted with the past, as the most sinful. It is only when time and place are favourable that military operations can lead to success.
In the present circumstances, however, the time being unfavourable, no good results will be deprived. A display of prowess in proper time and place becomes beneficial. Considering all this, an encounter with Partha is not advisible for us.
You are saying that Arjuna is alone.
He was alone when he fought with Devatas while Khandava Vana was burnt.
Alone he was when he married Subhadra by taking her away and challenged Yadavas.
Was he not alone when he conquered all the kings and conducted Rajalsuya Yaga.
He was also alone when he fought with Gandharva and saved Suyodhana.
Where were you then?
Alone he was when he fought with the demons, Nivata and Kavaca and saved Devatas.
He was alone when he conquered Kalakeyas who were unconquerable by Devatas.
Besides all these things, in your very presence, he alone struck Matsya Yantra and married Droupadi and challenged all the Kings who attended the Svayamvara.
Pandavas defeated all the kings on all four sides and performed Rajasooya Yaga.
What have you done? Nothing except enjoying royal plealsures in Hastinapura and boasting yourself.
Resisting Arjuna now is crossing ocean swimming with bare arms. That is not good Let us first save the King. Let us fight together with Arjuna. It is not wise for you to say that you alone will fight with Arjuna" said Krupacharya.

Karna gave a retart to the words of Krupacharya. "Knowing fully well that you have got partisan attitude towards Pandavas, Suyodhana innocently invited you for the war. Children, relatives will always be ready to enjoy the royal plealsures. Please go back to your residence and enjoy the plealsures. Unnecessarily you are invited for the battle. If I take the bow to my hand, the entire universe will shiver. Afterall, Arjuna is nothing before me" said Karna.
On hearing all this conversaion, Bheeshma interfered.
"Suyodhana! Drona, Asvathaama, Krupaachaarya expressed their views in a befitting manner. Karna also spoke with heroism. .
No man of wisdom can blame the Guru. If one is more powerful, he may fight but why should he blame others? Even if the enemy is a man of prowess, wise men may appreciate his heroism. One should respect elders.
Think about the present. Arjuna is coming upon his. Krupa Acharya! Let is fight together. It is not time for showing our differences. Excuse me. Knowingly or unknowingly some might have spoken ill of you. Kindly suppress your anger." said Bheeshma.
"Oh! why are you extending excuses. I am not that great man to excuse you. If Dronacharya forgives, that is sufficient." said Krupacharya.
Then Bhishma along with Karna went to Drona and Asvathaama and extended their apologies. Drona became cool.
"With the words of Bheeshma, I am appeased. Let us go. Let such arrangements be made that Partha may not be able to approach Duryodhana in battle. With the regard to the expiry of the period of exile, Bheeshma will speak." said Drona.
Bheeshma also thought that it was time to reveal the facts about the period of exile.
"Suyodhana! in consequences of the fractional excesses and deviations, there will be an increase of one month in every two years period. It seems to me that calculating like this, the period of excile completed by yesterday. So the promise of Pandavas has alrelady been fulfilled. Knowing this to be certain, Arjuna made his appearance. All of them, parlticularly Yudhishtira, are fully conversant with the meaning of the scriptures. How would they deviate from virtues? Had they intended to deviate from virtues, they would have fought with you even when they were unjustly defeated in dice game. Therefore, it is true that the man who has come is Arjuna and none else than Arjuna. It cannot be said that we will certainly defeat him. Success and defeat are quite natural for both sides. We may win or we may loose. Therefore, without thinking about the result, it is better to come to a pact with Arjuna." suggested Bheeshma.
"How can it be? I am not inclined to give a share in the kingdom. I am ready to fight with them. This is my decision. Act accordingly" said Suyodhana firmly.

Then Drona addressed the other warriors:
"Now I will decide what to do. Let us all follow this.
Suyodhana will proceed towards Hastinapura with one-fourth of our army in the forefront. Then the cows will follow Suyodhana with another one-fourth army. We will be moving from behind with the remaining half. I will be at the Centre. On my right side, Krupacharya, on my left side Asvathaama will stand. Karna will be in the forefront. Vikarna, Dussaasana, Sakuni, Saindhava, Somadatta, Baahlika, Bhoorisrava etc., warriors will be standing here and there. They will help the warriors who will be fighting with Arjuna.
This is the plan. Let all of us follow this" said Drona.
Bheeshma accepted this operation and said "I will stand in the rear of the whole army, protecting it from that point."
On one side a single hero Arjuna. On the other side mighty Kuru army with great warriors. All the divine bodies were standing in the sky and witnessing this battle.

Uttara kumara was driving the chariot with great speed. Arjuna blowing his conch Devadattam reached the Kuru army.
"Look at the army Uttara Kumara! Part of the army is proceeding in front. Another part is proceeding behind. We should know where Suyodhana is? Take our chariot to the left side of the army. If we are able to catch Suyodhana, the entire Kuru army will shatter. Our task will become easier. We will return to city with our cows. Otherwise, let us go to the place where cows are stationed. If we recover our cows, Suyodhana will come there to capture them again." said Arjuna.
Uttara Kumara drove the chariot to the left side of the army. Arjuna glanced at the entire kuru army. "Kumara! Suyodhana is not here. It is unnecessary to fight with them. Let us go towards the cows." said Arjuna. Accordingly, Uttara Kumara drove the chariot towards the cowss.
Arjuna shot two shafts each to Bheeshma, Drona and Krupacharya, falling at their feet, saluting them with the arrows.
Bheeshma, Drona and Krupacharya were very much pleased for his respect and devotion towards elders and Gurus.
Bheeshma told Drona "Acharya! Arjuna, having seen us, is proceeding further without fighting with us. It is evident that he is searching for Suyodhana. Suyodhana cannot alone fight with Arjuna. If Arjuna enters in between Suyodhana and us, it is highly dangerous. King is in danger. Let us save him." so saying Bheeshma drove the army towards Suyodhana. Meanwhile, Arjuna reached the cattle.
"Uttara Kumara! now I will attack the army guarding the cattle. Suyodhana will certainly come to their rescue. Drive our chariot eastwards" said Arjuna.
Only one-fourth of army is guarding the cattle. Arjuna easily defeated them. That small army was unable to resist Arjuna. Arjuna rescued the cattle and asked the cowherds to drive the cattle to Virata City. Driven by the cowherds, the cattle was running towards city. Arjuna stood in between the cattle and the army and resisting the army from reaching the cattle. The cattle almost reached the outskirts of City Virata.

The entire Kuru army surrounded Arjuna.

Fifth CHAPTER
Saint Vaisampaayana continued to say the story of Mahabharata to Janamejaya.
After rescuing the cows and drove them away towards the City of Virata, Arjuna stood between the cattle and the Kuru army.

Beholding Suyodhana from a distance, Arjuna said: "Bhoomimjaya! Look. Suyodhana is there. Drive our chariot towards his chariot."asked Arjuna.
In the meanwhile Bhishma, Karna proceeded towards Suyodhana. They both stood between Suyodhana and Arjuna. Suyodhana was very unhappy as the captured cattle was rescued by Arjuna. In the meanwhile, rest of the army also came near Suyodhana in defence.

Now Arjuna, on his chariot driven by Bhoomimjaya, is standing in front of Kuru Army.
"Prince Uttara kumara! Look and listen. I will show you all the prominent warriors in Kuru Army. The warrior with the flag of golden platform is our guru Dronacarya. Standing next to him is his son Asvathaama, with a the flag of lion. The warrior with the flag of golden cow is Krupacarya. That is Suyodhana, the king of Kuru Dynasty, with a serpant symbol on his flag. There is our grand father, Bhishma, with a flag of palm tree. Try to identify them with their flags.

Uttara Kumara! now drive our car towards our Guru Drona from the rightside as Pradakshina. In archery skills, his power and prowess is marvelous. We should not insult him by fighting with him at the first instance. We will first attack Suyodhana and fight with him. To save Suyodhana, Guru Drona may come to his rescue and fight with me. Then it is proper to fight with my Guru Drona.

The warrior standing beside him is his son, Asvathaama. He was born with the blessings of Lord Siva. He is a fiercest warrior. Standing next to Asvathaama is Krupaacharya, our guru from our childhood. He is equivalent to Guru Drona in archery skills. These two are most reverend. We should not fight with them in the first instance. Even if they come before us, drive our car to otherside.

Look at that side . Standing there is Karna, the beloved friend of Suyodhana. Karna learnt archery from Parasurama. He never cares for anybody while fighting with others. He is an equivalent warrior to me. I got this oopportunity to fight with Karna. Observe our fight carefully. If Karna beholds me, he will never keep quiet. He will jump upon me I will also attack him with equal force. Dont hesitate to drive our car against Karna.
Then standing is Suyodhana, son of Dhrutharashtra. He is though arrogant but of kind heart. He is a warrior of great prowess but highly aggressive. He developed hatredness and jealousy against us. A very bad character. If he himself attacks me , I will be in festive mood. Search for him and drive our car against him. At any cost we have to attack him like a thunder.

Look at that side. He is Bheeshma. A man of great prowess. An intelligent and wise man. He knows many skills in archery. He fought with Parasurama and vanquished him in war. Even by mistake dont approach him or go nearer to his car. If he gets anger, he will never allow me to approach Suyodhana. Be careful."

So saying, Arjuna introduced allthe great warriors in the Kuru army. At that time Asvathaama told karna:

'Karna! just now you have boasted yourself that you will fight with Arjuna with one hand. Look at that side. Arjuna is standing there on his car, with Gandeeva in his hand, ready to fight. Come on. Get ready. Fight with Arjuna. If you are incapable of fighting with Arjuna, discuss with Sakuni. King Suyodhana kept the entire burden of this operation upon hour shoulders. You cannot escape. Go ahead" told Asvathaama smilingly.

"I am not a coward like you Asvathaama, to escape from the war. I do not care if Arjuna comes or his father Indra comes. Stay there and behold my prowess" said Karna with uncontrollable anger.

In the meanwhile, Bheeshma, Drona, Krupaacarya and Asvathaana took positions to save the King Suyodhana. Along with them, Dussasana, Baahlika, Somadatta and other forces charged against Arjuna.

Arjuna set Gandeevam and shot arrows with great speed in hundreds and thousands. The arrows coming out of Gaandeevam were killing the Kuru army. Arjuna was fighting and killing the Army surrounding him and charging ahead. The entire Kuru army surrounded Arjuna and began to fight. Uttara Kumara was praising Arjuna about his vigour and valour. Gandeevam was like a circle in his hand. Within split of a moment, Arrows were showering from Gaandeevam. Arjuna was shooting arrows with both hands from both sides.

With the force of the arrows of Arjuna, the warriors were falling from the horses and horses tied to the cars are fleeing away. While fighting fiercely with enemies, Arjuna is taking care of Bhoominjaya, his charioteer and his horses, who remained unhurt. None in the Kuru army have courage to attack Arjuna. Arjuna has practically become unapproachable.

Then Arjuna attacked Karna. Arjuna first killed the charioteer of Karna and broke his car and bow. Arjuna blew Devadatta. Having seen the fate of Karna, the Kuru army took shelter behind Bheeshma. Bheeshma encouraged them.
Drona Krupa, Vikarna and others surrounded Suyodhana to safeguard him. Then Arjuna said: "Prince Uttaraa! Stop for a while. Suyodhana is now inaccessible. Karna is there. Let us attack him first. Unless he is defeated, Suyodhana will not come out." said Arjuna.

Uttara Kumara drove the car against Karna with great speed. One seeing that Arjuna was rushing against Karna, Chitrangada, Chitraradha, Sangraama Chitta, Dushpraha, Chitrasena, Vivimsati, Durmukha, Durjaya Vikarna, Shatruntapa, Dussasana and other kouravas attacked Arjuna from all sides. Arjuna first broke the bow of Vikarna. Vikarna fled away. Then Arjuna killed Shatruntapa. With the killing of Shatruntapa, other Kouravas fled away.

Then Sangramajit, the brother of Karna, attacked Arjuna. Arjuna took out a spear and stabbed him on his chest and killed him. Beholding the death of his brother, Karna grew angry. Karna shot volley of arrows against Arjuna. In this manner, Karna encountered Arjuna in battle for the first time. The rest of the army stopped fighting and beholding the war between Arjuna and Karna.

Arjuna came near Karna and said: "O Karna! Listen. In the open court you spoke that none can beat you. Now we are in war. Show your prowess now. Let us decide who is great. This is war field. It is not possible here to boast yourself. You have seen the death of your own brother. Dont try to flee away. You have laughed in the open assembly when Dussasana was pulling the saree of Droupadi. For that you have to suffer . On that day, I was bound by the word of my elder brother, Dharmaja and controlled my anger. Hence you escaped my wrath. You cannot escape now. I will see where will you go" said Arjuna

"What! Dont take shelter behind your brother. Are you such a great warrior? Come on. Fight with me. I will see your prowess! Arjunaa! You are a coward. You wandered in the forests with the false hope that you will get back your kingdom. People are saying that you have done that thing, you have done this thing. But I doubt whether you have in fact done all those acts." said Karna.

On hearing these words, Arjuna grew angry and broke the bow of Karna. Karna took out another bow and showered arrows on Arjuna. Arnuja hurled spears on Karna like a shower. Karna fled away. Uttara Kumara cried with joy. Arjuna blew Devadatta a s a mark of victory.

"Prince Uttara! Karna fled away. I think, next stands my Guru Drona." said Arjuna. Uttara Kumara stared at Arjuna and said: "O Partha! I am so much surprised, afraid and fearful about you. My body is shivering. My limbs are shaking. I am unable to drive the chariot. I have never seensuch a war so far since my birth." said Uttara Kumara.
Arjuna smiled at him. "Kumara UTtara! Dont fear. Drive the chariot without fear. Look that side. A warrior on the car with red horses is Drona. He is my Guru. He knows many Astras and Sastras and how to launch them and retract them. He showered affection on me more than his son, Asvathaama and taught me many archery skills. Unfortunately, today, I have to attack him in war. We cannot help it. Drive our car against his chariot" said Arjuna.

Uttara Kumara accordingly drove the chariot and stood in front of Guru Drona. Arjuna bowed before his Guru Drona "Guru Drona please bless me. Having suffered for 12 years in forests and one year in exile, I am before you. Kindly don't get angry upon me. Shower your affectionate blessings upon me. I will not strike you first unless you strike me with your arrows." prayed Arjuna.

Guru Drona was very much pleased with the humble words of Arjuna and shot twenty shafts on Arjuna. Arjuna cut them in between and fought with his Guru Drona. Both are mighty car warriors, experts in launching Astras and Sastras. Both are of great prowess. Again the entire army stopped the war and witnessing their battle .

Arjuna was attacking all the celestial arrows shot by Drona in the middle and again reversing them against Drona. Beholding Partha's infallibility, training, fleetness of hand, and the range also of Arjuna's arrows, Drona became amazed. Drona thought that it is difficult to vanquish Arjuna. All at once hundreds and thousands of straight arrows fell upon Drona's car. Arjuna shot the charioteer, and the flag of Drona with his arrows.

Beholding the fate of his father Asvathaama came to his rescue and resisted Arjuna. Arjuna gave some time for Drona to leave the battle field and then attacked Asvathaama. Arjuna shot the horses and the chariot of Asvathaama and also the charioteer. Asvathaama cut the string of the bow of Arjuna. While Arjuna was fixing the string, Asvathaama shot Arnuja with eight arrows at a time. Arjuna cut those arrows in between and shot Astras on Asvathaama. Arjuna was having Akshaya Tooneera from which any amount of arrows will be coming whereas Asvathaama was not having such one. Asvathaamaa's arrows were exhausted.

Observing this, Krupaachaarya came to the rescue of Asvathaama. Arjuna attacked Krupaachaarya. Krupaachaarya shot arrows hitting the flag of Arjuna, Kapidhvaja. Arjuna grew angry and broke the car of Krupacharya and killed the horses and also the charioteer. Now Krupaachaarya was without chariot. Krupaachaarya launched Sakti upon Arjuna but Arjuna broke it into pieces. Krupaachaarya took out his knife and shield and attacked Arjuna. Arjuna broke the sword of Krupaachaarya. Immediately, Krupaachaarya boarded the chariot of Asvathaama.

In the meanwhile Vrushasena attacked Arjuna. Arjuna broke his bow and hurled a spear towards him. Vrushasena ran away. Then Dussaasana, Durmukha and Vivimsati, Vikarna and Sakuni surrounded Arjuna. Arjuna turned into a circular form and broke the chariots of all of them and broke their bows. All of them ran away unable to attack Arjuna again.

Now Arjuna stopped for a while. "Uttara Kumaraa! Look at that side. With a flag of golden palm tree, shining like a celestial, Bheeshmaa, my grand father only remains. Drive our chariot towards him." said Arjuna.

Beholding Arjuna, Bheeshma blew his conch. Arjuna also blew Devadatta. They were looking like mighty bulls ready for fight with each other. First Bheeshma broke the flag of Arjuna. Then he shot arrows towards the charioteer, Bhoomimjaya and the horses. Arjuna broke them in between and made arrowy shower on Bheeshma. Now Bheeshmaa was covered with arrows. In no time, Bheeshma came out of those arrowy shower. Again Arjuna shot Bheeshma with his arrows.

It appears as if Arjuna was exhibiting all his Astras and Sastras before his Grandfather, like a child and Bheeshma was enjoying the show by cutting each and every arrow shot by Arjuna.

As his grandfather was breaking all his arrows in between, Arjuna grew angry and broke the bow of Bheeshmaa. Bheeshma took out another bow and showered arrows on Arjuna incessantly. Arjuna broke all those arrows and shot the charioteer of Bheeshma and the horses. Arjuna again broke the bow of Bheeshma. While Bheeshma was taking another bow, Arjung shot him on his chest. Bheeshma fell down on the chariot. The charioteer diverted the chariot to the other side.

As Bheeshma had gone out of field, Arjuna stopped for a while. Arjuna looked around and observed that Drona, Karna and Krupaachaarya were stading at a distance. "Uttara Kumaara! drive our car towards them" said Arjuna. Uttara Kumara speedily rushed towards that side.

On seeing that Arjuna was rushing towards them Asvathaama told Karna: "Karna! Arjuna is coming towards us. What can we do? You are only capable of attacking him. You have to fight with him" said Asvathaama.

"Yes Asvathaama! I will fight with Arjuna. Just look at me......How I fight!" said Karna. But by that time all the warriors in Kuru army were verymuch tired and were standing aloof without fighting.

Here the position of Uttara Kumara is same. "Arjuna! you are fighting with your enemies untiringly. What about me! I donot find time even to take some water. I am unable to drive the car. Please leave me" requested Uttara Kumara.

Arjuna smiled at him and said: "O Prince UttaraKumaara! Be patient. Only Suyodhana remains. If you want, I will help you in driving the chariot. You take some rest. Dont be afraid" said Arjuna.

Arjuna was searching for Suyodhana in the entire Kuru army. At last he could see the flag of Arjuna. "O Bhoominjaya! Suyodhana is there. Drive our chariot towards Suyodhana. Come on quick" hurried Arjuna. Bhoominjana drove the chariot towards Suyodhana.

Arjuna was charging against Suyodhana like a hungry tiger. Arjuna shot two arrows and hit the chest of Suyodhana. Suyodhana hit Arjuna on his forehead. Arjuna broke those arrows and showered arrows on Suyodhana. Vikarna came in between on an elephant to save the King . Arjune hit the elephant with his fist on its head. That elephant fell down. Vikarna alighted the elephant and boarded the chariot of Vivimsati.
Again Arjuna aimed at Suyodhana and Suyodhana was injured. Arjuna also hit others who have come to help Suyodhana. Suyodhana fled away from the war field. Arjuna was chasing Suyodhana.

Then Karna told Bheeshma "Look at that side! Arjuna is chasing Suyodhana. We have to save our King" said Karna. Bheeshma and Drona did not pay heed to the words of Karna.

Suyodhana requested Bheeshma and Drona "What is this! Why you are turning that side. I am your king Is it not proper on your part to save me as your king. Please save me" prayed Suyodhana.

Bheeshma turned back and came to the rescue of Suyodhana and consoled him. In the meanwhile Arjuna came very near to Suyodhana.

Arjuna stopped his chariotand told to Suyodhana: "O King Suyodhana! King of Kuru Dynasty! What is this? Why you are fleeing away from the war field? As a Kshatriya, is it proper on your part? I am younger among the sons of Kunti. I am alone. But you are the eldest of all the sons of Gaandhaari. You are aided by a mighty army and your friends and relatives. If you run away from the war field like this, will any body appreciate your act.

O King of Kuru Dynasty! If you flee like this, how can you ride on a royal elephant followed by many elephants in the streets of Hastinapura with all royal honors. How can you sit on your royal throne in Hastinapura in the presence of all your ministers, Samanthas and citizens of Hastinapura. How can you enjoy royal pleasures from tomorrow onwards? How can you enjoy sensual plealsures with your ladies.
Suyodhana! Heed my words. If you die in the war, you will attain divine pleasures. If you win in the war, you can enjoy royal plealsures. But fleeing away from the war field is heinous . But one thing. Suyodhana! dont think that you can win the war by playing dicegame here. This is war field. Here only arrows will play but not dice. Hence dont flee. Fight with me. Come on." Arjuna provoked Suyodhana.

With these words, Suyodhana grew angry. He sought the help of Bheeshma, Drona, Krupa, Asvathaama and Karna. Bheeshma, Drona, Kripaacaharya, Asvathaama turned back and rushed forward with great speed with drawn bows and arrows fixed on the bow strings. Beholding these advances Arjuna also rushed at them. All of them surrounded Partha and rained on him from all sides perfect shower of arrows like a heavy downpour. Warding off those arrows coming from the bows of Kuru Warriors, Arjuna was also protecting his charioteer and his chariot and horses.

Arjuna thought for a while. Killing of Suyodhana is the vow of Bheemasena. Besides, they have to collect the turbans of Kuru Warriors for toys of Uttara. Removal of turbans from their heads, tantamounts to vanquishng them personally. Therefore it is better to retreat from the war at this stage. Arjuna evolved another irresistable weapon obtained from Kubera, called Sammohana Astra. That Astra completely covered the entire Kuru Army from all the directions and stupefied their senses. The enire Kuru army engulfed under the influence of Sammohaanaastra.

Sammohanaastra will squeeze all the strength of each and every warrior in the Kuru Army and make them senseless. For this Astra, Indira was the chief deity. It is an irresistable Astra. With the influence of this Astra, all the warriors in the Kuru Army dropped all their weapons, bows, arrows etc and fell down unconscious as if they were in deep sleep.

Arjuna told Prince Uttara Kumara "O Prince! the entire kuru army is lying in an unconcious state. You go and fetch the turbans of Suyodhana, Karna, Asvathaama, Drona and Krupaachaarya. Never approach Bheeshma. He will never be influnced by this Astra. He is in conscious state." said Arjuna.

Uttara Kumaara, with full of joy, alighted the car, went near them and collected their turbans and again boarded the chariot.

"Let us go out of the battle field" said Arjuna. Uttara Kumara drove the chariot far away from the battle field. Arjuna stood there and observed the further developments in Kuru Army.

All the Kuru Army regained consciousness. They saw Arjuna far away from the battle field. Suyodhana was making arrangements to resume war with Arjuna. Then Bheeshma cautioned Suyodhana.

"Suyodhana! You do not know what had happened. I observed everything. Except me, all of you lost consciousness. Arjuna collected only your head turbans but not your heads. Had he cut your heads, what will happen? Inspite of all your mis deeds, he did not cause any harm even to you. It shows his compassion and magnanimity and nothingelse. Inspite of all these things, if you are inclined to continue the war, the entire Kuru army will vanish like a final offering in Yajna. (Poornaahuti). Dont be particular about false prestige. The cattle had already reached Virata city. Why for this war? Why for the loss of army? Let us go back to Hartinapura with the remaining army." said Bheeshma.

Though Suyodhana was inclined to continue the war, unable to overcome the words of his grand father, Bheeshma, Suyodhana decided to go back to Hastinapuram.
Beholding all these developments, Arjuna blew Devadatta as a mark of victory. Then he shot each two shafts to Bheeshma, Drona, Krupaachaarya as saluting shafts and bid farewell to them.

Then he told Uttara Kumara: "O Prince Uttara Kuamara! as promised, we rescued our cattle and vanquished the enemy and brought their turbans. Let us go back to city." said Arjuna.

Uttara Kumara drove back the chariot towards Virata City. "Uttara Kumaar! please dont forget to tell others that you yourself have vanquished the Kuru army and rescued the cattle." told Arjuna.

Uttara Kumara laughed "Arjuna! everybody knows who I am and they know pretty well that I am incapable of conquering the Kuru army. How can I hide the truth. Any how I cannot say "No" to you. I will reveal the truth whenever you wish" said Bhoominja.
Then they reached the Samee tree. Uttara Kumara kept Gaandeevam and other arms on the Sami tree as usual. Arjuna got back his original attire of Bruhannala and sat on the chariot as charioteer. Bhoominjaya boarded the car as hero.

"Kumaaraa! send all these cowherds to Virata City to proclaim your victory." Accordingly Uttara Kumara sent the cowherds to city to proclaim their victory and also rescuing cattle.

By that time, King Virata reached Virata city and enquired about his son He was informed that Suyodhana accompanied by Bheeshma, Drona,Krupa, karna and other warriors captured the cattle on the northern side and Prince Uttara Kumara proceeded towards northern side to rescue the cattle and Brihannala was his charioteer.
He was very much annoyed. "Uttara Kumara is a child in warfare. Not knowing fully well about the prowess of Kuru Warriors he went against them. Where is the mighty Kuru army? Where is this child Uttara Kumara? Immediately dispatch sufficient army to the war field." ordered Virata.

Kanku Bhattu told Viarata "O King Virata! we have conquered Susarma in the battle. Here also we will win. Dont worry. Anyhow, Uttara Kumara has not gone to the war field alone. He was accompanied by Brihannala. Brihannala is not an ordinary warrior He can vanquish even divine army. You need not dispatch army immediately. Let us wait for the word of victory of Uttara Kumara" said Kanku.
In the meanwhile, the cattlekeepers arrived there. "O King Virata. Victory is yours. Our Prince, Uttara Kumara, conquered the Kuru army and rescued the cattle on the northern side. We are here to proclim his victory" said the cattle keepers.

King Virata was very happy. "Is it true! My son, Uttara Kumara conquered the Kuru army and the mighty warriors in Kuru army. O my god. I am very happy. O ministers! Proclaim this victory of my son throughout the city. Let the folks celebrate it. Dispatch Brahmins, Ladies to welcome Uttara Kumara" ordered King Virata.
"Kanka! I very happy. My joy knows to bounds. Come on. Let lus play a game. Sent for the dice" said Virata.

"O King Virata! you are in a fully joyous mood. Can I play with you today" said Kanka. Virata laughed loudly and ordered Sairandhri (Malini) to bring dice. Sairandhri (Malini) brought dice and kept before them. They both started playing dice game.
"Kankaa! My son is a great warrior, otherwise how can he conquer the entire Kuru army and rescue the cattle. He raised our prestige to a highest pedestal. Is it not?" asked Virata with great joy.

"OKing Virata! What else will be the happiest occasion than hearing the victorious deeds of Uttara Kumara in the battle with great warriors like Bheeshma, Drona, Krupa, Asvathaama and Karna. He will be acclaimed by all in the world" said Kankubhattu.
Virata grew angry. "What do you mean.....are you doubting the victory of my son Uttara Kumara. O Kanku! I have tolerated so far what you have spoken. Stop talking like that" said Virata.

But Kanku continued. "O King Virata! When Brihannala is on the chariot, shining like a midday sun, Uttara Kumara will always be victorious." said Kanku Bhattu.
"Stop! Kanku! Stop! I have so far heard what all you said about several wonders in the world. But, a charioteer, a Brihannala, a third gender person, who is not even capable of standing erect, is able to conquer the mighty Kuru army. It is quite unheard of. Why you are not accepting the victory of my son. No. I cannot tolerate your foolish talk any more. Please keept quiet." said Virata.

Kanku Bhattu wantonly continued his talking. "Yes King Virata! It is true. On beholding the mighty Kuru army, Brihannala might have thought of fighting with them. Hence he might have fought with Kuru army while your son, Bhoomijaya, was driving the chariot as charioteer and rescued our cows. It is quite possible and correct also. You better proclaim in the city that Brihannala is arriving victoriously after defeating Kouravas in the battle." said Kanku Bhattu.

King Virata was shivering with anger. He could not control himself. "How dare you praise afterall a third gender person, Brihanna" So saying he threw the dice in his hand against Kanku Bhattu with great force which hit the forehead of Kanku bhattu. Blood was oozing from the wound.

Kanku Bhattu looked at Sairandhri and bowed his head. Immediately Sairandhri came near Kanku Bhattu and dressed the wound with his saree end and stopped the ------blood. Virata looked at this.

"What Sairandhri! Why you are dressing the wound of Kanku Bhattu and stopping the blood shedding on the floor.

"O King Virata! Kanku Bhattu is a virtuous personality born in an highest race. If his blood sheds on the floor, there will be drought in that area for number of years equivalent to the number of drops. If the blood of a virtuous brahmins sheds on our land, it will cause much hardship to us. Hence I did like that" replied Sairandhri.
In the meanwhile, Princess Uttara waited at the outskirts of Virata City and welcomed his brother Uttara Kumara and her Guru Brihannala by offering sandal and flowers and othe sacred things. Other Ministers and Samanthas also hugged Uttara Kumara and praised him for his victory.

Uttara Kumara politely said "It is not my own victory. Only with the help of Brihannala, my charioteer, I could win the mighty kuru army" said Uttara Kumara.
King Virata received information through a servant in waiting, that his son Uttara Kumara was seeking permission to come inside and have audience. King Virata immediately said "yes".

Kanku Bhattu secretely told that servant "I received an injury on my forehead. Brihannala may be annoyed about it . Hence you first bring Uttara Kumara inside and then allow Brihannala after some time" said Kanku Bhattu.

As Virata was eagerly waiting to meet his victorious son, he did not hear these words. As per the wish of Kanku Bhattu, Uttara Kumara first entered the palace and bowed before his father, Virata and took his blessings. Virata hugged his son affectionately and overjoyously.

Then Uttara Kumara bowed before Kanku Bhattu and sought his blessings. Prince Uttara Kumara saw the wound on the forehead of Kanku. "Oh! what is this? How is it caused?" enquired Uttara Kumara. "Nothing. When I am praising your Victorious deeds, Kanku Bhattu countered that because of Brihannala, you got this victory. Unable to control my anger, I hit him with dice. Thus the injury was caused" said Virata casually.
"O Father! You committed a blunder. It is not proper. We have to respect him whatever he says because he speaks always truth. Beg his pardon first. If virtuous people like Kanku curses us, how can we get wealth and victory." said Uttara Kumara.

Accepting the words of his son, Virata prayed for pardon. "I am not at all angry King Virata. There is no question of pardoning you. You are a virtuous king. But you have done it in a bad time. Forget it" said Kanku Bhattu. Virata satisfied with his reply.
Now Brihannala entered the hall and bowed before King Virata. Virata blessed him and praised him for the victory.

Then Virata asked his son Uttara Kumara "O Bhoominjaya! How can you defeat and drive away the Mighty Kuru army consisting of Bheeshma, Drona, Krupa, Asvathaama, Karna and other mighty warriors, that too when you are alone. If you attack one, hundred will fall upon you. How is it possible! One has defeated Parasurama and the another is a great teacher in archery while another was born with the blessings of Lord Siva (Asvathaama). The others are capable of winning even the heavenly bodies. The sons of Dhrutarashtra are capable of conquering the entire earth. How have you faced them and drove them away and rescued our cattle, that too without receiving a single injury on your body. It is nothing but a miracle. How Suyodhana flee from the battle field? I am very much astonished even to hear these things. Kindly tell me in detail what had happened? " asked King Virata.

" O my father! This is not my victory. I never attacked the mighty Kuru Army. I am not even capable of doing it. One heavenly body came to my rescue. He won the Kouravas and rescued the cows. I acted only as a charioteer and remained as a a spectator to this victory.

I will tell you in detail. On receiving the information that Kouravas captured our cattle on the northern side, I proceeded in that direction, with Brihannala as my charioteer, as none were available at that time in the city. Beholding the Mighty Kuru Army and the mighty warriors like Bheeshma, Drona etc., I got down from the chariot and ran back with fear. At that time, a divine personality appeared before me, patted on by back and brought me back to the chariot. While I was driving the chariot, he fought with the Kuru army and rescued the cattle and drove the cattle towards the city. He attacked Suyodhana. There was a fierce battle between them. That divine personality conquered the entire Kuru army and all the mighty warriors and drove away Kouravas along with their army." said Uttara Kumara.

"Is it so! Who is that divine personality? Where is that mighty personality? I want to hug him and pay my respects and regards." asked Virata.
"He will appear before us either today or tomorrow" said Uttara Kumara. While this conversation was going on, Kanku Bhattu was covering his face with an upper cloth and hid the wound on his forehead. Kanku Bhattu felt happy that that Divine personality was none else than Arjuna. Brihannala appreciated Uttara Kumara for handling the situation tactfully.

Then Uttara Kumara went to his mother Sudheshna and sought her blessings. Then he presented the turbans of the Kuru warriors collected by him to his sister, Princess Uttara. She was very happy and praised the vigour and valour of her brother, Uttara Kumara.

On that night, all the Pandavas and Droupadi assembled in the apartment of Youdhistira and discussed about their future plans. Arjuna explained in detail what had happened yesterday. Arjuna asked Bhima as to why Dharmaja was hiding his face.
Unable to hide the truth, Dharmaja told thus: "Arnuja! while King Virata was praising his sons's victory, I told him that when Brihannala was there, it is not a great thing that Uttara Kumara vanquished the enemy. King Virata grew angry and hit me with the dice on my forehead. Hence I sustained this injury" said Yudhishtira.

Bheema grew wild. "Now itself I will kill that Virata and sent him to the abode of yama" said Bheema. "Brother Yudhishtira! Let us kill this king Virata and grab this kingdom" said Arjuna.

Dharmaja pacified them. "Bhima! Arjuna! we should not speak like that Virata gave us shelter while we were in troubles. He does not know about us. We must be thankful to him. Tomorrow, we will reveal ourselves. Still if he does not care for us, we will think about him later." said Dharmaja.

Then, on the third day, attired in white robes after holy bath, and decked in ornaments of all kinds, the five Pandava brothers, having accomplished their vow, and with Yudhishthira at their head, looked resplendent as they, entered the palace-gate . And having entered the council-hall of Virata, they took their seats on the thrones reserved for kings, and shone brilliantly like fires on the sacrificial altar.

And after Pandavas had taken their seats, Virata,came there for holding his council and discharging other royal offices. And beholding the Pandavas blazing like fires, the king reflected for a moment.

And then, filled with wrath, the Matsya king spoke to Kanka seated there like a celestial and looking like the lord of celestials said, "A player at dice! you were employed by me as a courtier! How could you occupy the royal seat thus attired in handsome robes and ornaments?" asked Virata.

Hearing these words of Virata, Arjuna smilingly said in reply, "This person, O king, deserves to occupy the same seat with Indra himself. Devoted to the Brahmanas, acquainted with the Vedas, indifferent to luxury and carnal enjoyments, habitually performing sacrifices, steady in vows, this one, indeed, is the very embodiment of virtue. He is foremost of all Persons endued with energy and superior to every body on earth in intelligence, devoted to asceticism. He is no other than the son of King Pandu, Yudhishtira. Does he not deserve to occupy the small throne of Virata Kingdom" said Arjuna.

Virata said, "If this one, indeed, be the Kuru king Yudhisthira the son of Kunti, which amongst these is his brother Arjuna, and which, the mighty Bhima. Which of these is Nakula, and which Sahadeva and where is the celebrated Draupadi? After their defeat at dice, the sons of Pritha have not been heard of by any one."

Arjuna said, "Even this one, O king, who is called Valala and is your cook, is that Bhima of mighty arms and terrible prowess and furious impetus. It was he who killed Bakasura,Kimmeera and Hidimbaasura . Even he is that Gandharva, who killed Kichaka and it was he who killed tigers and bears in the inner apartment of your palace. He who had been the keeper of your horses is called Nakula, and this one is Sahadeva, the keeper of your cattle. Both these sons of Madri are great car-warriors, possessed of great fame and beauty of person. And even this sairandhri, called Malini, is Drupada's daughter, your wife's Sairindhri, for whose sake, O king, the Kichakas were killed by Bheemasena.

Now Bhimasena said "O king, Brihannala, who has so far taught about music and dacne to your daughter, is no other than Arjuna. It was he who conquered Indra and allowed Agni to fulfil Khandavavana burning. It was he who killed Nivata and Kavaca and the demons called Kalakeyas." said Bheema.

Virata was in a perplexed mood. He is unable to reconcile the events what had happened. Now Uttara Kumara standing by the side of Arjuna said "O Father! yesterday I told about a divine personality who helped me in fighting with Kouravas. He is no other than Arjuna. At his request only I did not real his name on that day." said Uttara Kumara

On hearing the words of his own son Uttara Kumara, King Virata hugged Arjuna with affection. He bowed before the feet of Dharmaja. He also embraced Bhima, Nakula and Sahadeva. King Virata introduced Pandavas to all his courtiers and ministers. He sent word to his wife Sudheshna to honour Droupadi in a befitting manner.
Then Arjuna said: We have, O king Virata! happily passed in your abode the period of non-discovery, like infants in the womb! for which we are very much thankful to you" said Arjuna.

"O Arjuna! kindly dont speak like that. I am not different from you. You have so far suffered for twelve years in forests and took shelter in my kingdom. It is my fortune to have you as my guests during this one year. I am honoured. Now this Matsya kingdom is yours. Me, my sons, my brothers, my ministers, all will serve you. In case of war with Kouravas, I will be behind you and render all kind of help and assistance.
Then said Uttara Kumara "O Father! Are we now the kings of Matsya Kingdom? Did they not save me and you in the war and saved our kingdom? Therefore, Matsya Kingdom belongs to them. How can we give their kingdom to theselves? They have so far been living in our kingdom as fire covered with ashes. We also spoke many untolerable words against them. Now it is proper on our part to pray excuse. As I already told you, our kingdom, our wealth, and everything is their property. Therefore, we have to give them a different gift. Kindly order to bring my sister Princess Uttara Kumari here" said Uttara Kumara.
Then King Virata ordered his ministers to bring Uttara Kumari. The minsters, after obtaining permission from Queen Sudheshna, brought Uttara Kumari to KingVirata.
Then King Virata prayed Yudhishtira thus: "King Yudhishtira! Out of ignorance, I committed many blunders against you. Kindly excuse me. I make over my entire kingdom to you, and what else I have. Let the sons of Pandu accept these without the slightest hesitation. And let Dhananjaya, accept the hand of Uttara . I am offering my daughter, Princess Uttara Kumari in marriage to your brother, Arjuna. Kindly accept it. And alliance of this kind between the Matsya and the Bharatas is, indeed, desirable". said King virata.
Arjuna looked at his brother, Yudhishtira. With the permission of Dharmaja, Arjuna said: "King Virata! I taught music and dance to her. I am her Guru. Guru is equivalent to father. Hence, she is equivalent to my daughter. I cannot marry her. But I will make her as my daughter-in-law by marrying her to my son Abhimanyu, son of Subhadra, and nephew of Lord Sri Krishna. He is a celestial youth in beauty and he surpassed all in the knowledge of weapons. He is fit to be your son in law and husband for your daughter, Uttara.
Yudhishtira gladly accepted this proposal. King Virata was very happy. King Virata introduced his daughter Uttara to Dharmaja, Bheema, Nakula and Sahadeva. Immediately, King Virata sent for the priests and fixed Muhurat for the marriage. Then both Yudhishtira and King Virata sent invitations to all their relatives, friends, kings etc. inviting them for the marriage.
{Here we should remember one thing. Generally the youth of this generation, believe that these epics, Maha Bharat, Bhagavatam, Bhagavadgita are meant to be read only after retirement or after passing 60 years. It may not be correct. They are useful for the people of all ages. For examble take the above incident in Maha Bharat. When King Virata offered his daughter Uttara to Arjuna, he might have gladly accepted it. Because, whereever Arjuna goes, he will marry one girl and bring her along with him.
But, here, Arjuna did not accept this proposal. Instead he propounded a principle here. The relationship between Arjuna and Uttara was Teacher and Student. For a student, Teacher is equivalent to father. (Matru Devo Bhava, Pitru dEvobhava, Aacharya devo bhava). Therefore, it is just and proper to marry my student.
But what is going on now a days. Students are falling in love with teachers, lecturers and Principals and vice versa. Teachers, lecturers and Principals are even forcing the students to love them, marry them, and using force against them, and outraging their modesty. But Arjuna in Maha Bharata says it is not correct.
As the present day youth do not now about Maha Bharata, they are ignorant of this principle. Hence reading Mahabharata is a must not only for old but also young and youth).
While marriage preparations were going in the Virata City, Suyodhana, along with Bheeshma, Drona and others was proceeding towards Hastinapura. On the way, they made a halt at one place.
Suyodhana entertained a doubt about the words of Bhishma with regard to completion of 13 years period. He consulted Karna and Sakuni. At their instance, he sent one emissary to Yudhishtira. That emissary spoke to Yudhishtira: "Dharmaja! Arjuna revealed himself before Kouravas even before completion of one year period of exile. It is our opinion. You better calculate the period of 12 years and one year exile and decide whatever is just and proper" said emissary.
Those words of the emissary sounded that "you have deliberately violated our agreement of 13years. Hence you have to go back to forest for 12 years."
Yudhishtira smiled and said: "We have completed 12years of living in forest and one year in exile successfully. Kindly tell these words to Suyodhana in the presence of Bhishma and Drona" said Yudhishtira. The emisaary returnedback to Suyodhana and told the same words.
Without disclosing the fact of sending emissary to Yudhishtira, Suyodhana told Bhishma: "We unnecessarily fought with Arjuna. We have not examiend the fact in detail whether Pandavas completed their 13 years as agreed and whether Arjuna revealed himself even before comletion of one year of exile. Let us decide about it" said Suyodhana.
"Suyodhana! please stop that discussion. Others will laught at us. Beholding Arjuna, I told you that they have completed the 13 years period, calculating the additional days occurring for every two years. Nofurther discussion is necessary. Let us go back to Hastinapura." said Bheeshma. Accordingly Suyodhana proceeded to Hastinapuram.
Here in Virata City, Pandavas wen to to the Sami Tree and worshipped it and brought back their arms, bows, arrows, etc. kept by them before entering into Virata City in exile.

They stayed at a place called Upaplaavyam nearer to Virata City. King Virata made all arrangements for their comfortable stay at Upaplaavyam. Sri Krishna accompanied by his wives Rukmini, Satyabhama etc, sister Subhadra and Abhimanyu and his brother Balarama, Satyaki etc. Krutavarma, Pradyumna, Samba, Yuyudhaana, Akroora, Indra Sena, and other warriors arrived at Upaplaavyam. Dharmaja welcomed them with due honours.
King of Drupada, King of Kasi, accompanied by their army arrived at Upaplaavyam. Other Kings who were invited for the marriage also arrived at Upaplaavyam. King Virata made all arrangements for all the invitees.
Arrangements for the marriage are going on with great speed. Marriage hall was beautifully decorated. Uttara was decorated as Bride. Virata sent word through Priests inviting Pandavas and Srikrishna for marriage. Marriage rituals started.
Yudhishtira accompanied by his four brothers, Droupadi, and other wives, Sri Krishna, his wives, Balarama, arrived at the marriage hall. Both bride and bride groom were standing in front of the bridal curtain. The auspicious time arrived. Bridal curtain was removed. Bride and Bridegroom were looking at each other with shyness. Both the Bride and Bride groom poured rice, pearls etc on each of their heads as a marriage ritual. Abhimanyu caught the hand of Uttara. The marriage ritual was comleted. Sri Krishna gave several presentations to both bride and bridegroom.
Thus Vaisampaayana told Janamejaya the story of Mahabharata, Virata parva.
